I see a lot of posts going from prepaid to postpaid, but what about the other way around? I’m no longer in Canada but I need to keep my phone number, and I’d like to swap off a postpaid to a prepaid and keep my number. Is that possible?
Yes, you could keep the number.
However, you could simply “switch” from a postpaid plan to prepaid. You would have to active a brand new prepaid sim and prepaid account. After that you can move your number over.
Switchinv to prepaid is a bit of a pain as you would need to get a koodo prepaid sim and prepaid does not work outside of Canada and the US.
The cheapest prepaid plan is $15. You might as well switch to the Koodo starter plan in postpaid which is also $15

To switch to the $15 starter plan, you need to contact Koodo and a rep can make the change for you. Since you are out of the country just send koodo a. Private message via Facebook or Twitter
Port your number over to a VoIP service in order to maintain ownership. Optionally, have those calls forwarded to your current number.
CallCentric is great for that and has very flexible call management. Re-enlist with Koodo when you return.
You can often find pre-paid SIM cards on eBay.ca (not .com) for delivery by mail, and do the on-line portion of account set-up, but the phone will not work until you return to Canada.
