Earlier this afternoon, I got a call from “Koodo” and the guy on the line first confirmed my full name and address. Then he told me that apparently my billing address has been changed to somewhere in Toronto and said that he was calling to make sure that it was me who made the change. When I siad I did not make the change he said he sent a text to my phone and that he needed the code, that’s when i realized it was a scam since Koodo will never call you asking for the verification code. After I told him I’m not giving the code and hung up, I ignored his next call and then I was spam messaged at least 66 times in the span of 2 minutes from 66 different numbers. Messages consisted of type yes to confirm, and codes for sites I never signed up for.

The number I recieved the calls from was 1 866-995-6636, I’m not sure if that is a Koodo number that he’s spoofing, I couldn’t find much about that number online.

And also, the guy on the line sounded like a normal canadian and did not have a hint of a foreign acccent. So I imagine he’s had a few scores by now.

Now I am considering changing my number but I’m not sure if that is nessesary.

Have any of you had any calls like this recently?

EDIT: And yes, I changed my password to Koodo immediatly.

Hey,

That number is Koodo’s official line, so it was definitely spoofed. You did the right thing hanging up and not giving the code. Those spam texts after are classic scammer behaviour. Changing your number isn’t usually needed unless harassment continues. Just keep an eye on your Koodo account and bank for anything odd. If you want, I can flag a rep to check if anything changed on your account.

Have you checked your self-serve to see if all of your information are intact and no changes have been made?

From the description, it is definitely a spam. They likely researched you and your carrier. I would recommend you stay vigilant.

Regarding the 866 number, you could go into Koodo self-serve, check usage to see which number you received call/sms from, if it is reported as a the real Koodo number there, it is a serious issue.

I delayed him on the call and looked at my Koodo account and in fact, my address was not changed. When I said that he said it was “pending” which I new was nonsense. Then I hung up. But should I be worried about the texts I recieved after? It makes it look like he is attempting to use my number to sign up for stuff. Thanks.

I just looked at my minutes history and it does say *611, which when I looked that up it means a call to the carrier technical support. So does this mean Koodo got hacked? What do you mean exactly by serious issue?

What I asked was for you to find the actual number that called you earlier. If you dialed *611, it is an outgoing call, not incoming call. I would like to determine what the actual  number they were calling from - and whether it is reported by Koodo in usage records.

There are several possibilities with the verification code though. They might have attempted to use the code to access bank, upgrade your phone, switch your SIM, etc.

As of now, I think you are safe. However, since they knew your name and carrier, they might already know your password for certain services. I would recommend exercise caution. If you can, try to change password of your self-serve on a secure device.

*611 is all I see on my usage but I assure that I did not initialize any of the calls. Odd. The number I recieved the calls from was 1 866-995-6636

So they are sophisticated and hid their ID well. If you go into the SMS history, can you see the ID of the incoming SMS?

No, it just says:

From: *611

*MY CITY*

To: *MY NUMBER*

INCOMING CLIENT *MY REGION*

In addition to changing your password on your self serve account, I would keep an eye out on your email. You may want to consider a password change as well. A lot of 2 factor authentication goes through email.

I would also suggest you get a callback via koodo assist to put a block on your account for a sim swap, porting and possibly a phone purchase if you think tie scammer is targeting you. But it is up to you if you want to go that far.

Due to the serious nature of your situation, I would highly suggest you to schedule a callback through Koodo Assist to speak with a rep and have them immediately enable Port Fraud Protection on your account. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/port-fraud-protection

You may also want want to report this incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and consider placing a fraud alert on Equifax and TransUnionhttps://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/report-signalez-eng.htm

Hi @conman1005

We have looked into it and we couldn’t find any note in this regard on your account, so this was certainly a scam attempt. No changes or suspicious activity on your account based on the account details

We recommend checking this article to find out more about how to identify scam and fraud

and also checking the Call Control feature https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/call-control
