Question

Maintain existing plan on new phone with esim

I have an existing monthly plan with an iPhone 8 that uses an physical sim card. I like the plan I currently have, but want to upgrade my phone. I would prefer to buy a new phone from Apple directly, but the new phones use esim. The ‘convert to esim’ option is not available on my phone. Does this mean it is not possible for me to hold on to my existing plan because it’s not possible for me to generate an esim/move that to a new phone?

Hi there,

You can you will just have to purchase an eSim voucher from your closest Koodo or Telus store. These are usually around $10-$15 plus tax. If your device does not have the convert to eSim option you have to purchase the voucher.

Once you have the new iPhone and the voucher, you need to perform a sim swap in self serve.

This will change your physical sim to the eSim voucher. Once swapped, you then just scan the QR code on the voucher. Steps to change the sim after you have the device and voucher can be found below. 😎

There is another way to do it. If you are able to borrow an eligible iPhone (iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later) from a close friend or relative, you can insert your physical SIM card to set up the eSIM on their phone and then transfer it over to your new device. It is a bit of a hassle, but it will save you the fee for the eSIM voucher. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/esim-on-apple
