Koodo "Loyalty Department"

Let me first preface this post by saying my issue has been resolved by some amazing staff at Koodo, so this post is more about making others aware, but I would appreciate if experts or actual Koodo employees were able to weigh in on it.

TL;DR: Fraudsters gonna fraud.

I received a call (several, in fact) from a person claiming to be with the "Koodo Loyalty Department", offering me a 30% discount on my current rate, and then a free upgrade to my handset.  I was told I could remain with my existing plan - which is very good, in my opinion - but when I was selecting the phone, I was directed to one of two specific models.  The one I'd selected also indicated I'd have to change my plan, which while I wasn't necessarily happy about, the new plan was also pretty decent.  It did show my monthly payment suddenly jump from the alleged discounted rate to nearly double my current monthly rate.  I was also instructed to not tell the order verification staff about the conversation I'd had with the "Loyalty Department", which was a red flag, and should have raised more suspicion and questions than it did.

I ended up being reached out to by Koodo staff advising "Our records indicate that you were contacted with a fraudulent mobility offer. This call did not come from [Koodo]. If you interacted with this caller, please contact us as soon as possible by dialing *611 on your mobile", which was followed up by an email advising my account had been unlinked from my username.  After speaking with the actual Koodo staff, I was able to get everything resolved, the new phone was cancelled and returned to the shipper, the charges reversed, and I am back on my existing plan.

I received another call (several) from the same "Koodo Loyalty Department" person today, asking about the tracking information for the new phone.  I began asking him questions about the entire scenario, to which he essentially claimed he wasn't permitted to give out his employee ID number, claimed that other departments within Koodo didn't have access to the promotions his department did, and assured me that everything was above board because I'd received emails from him with the Koodo letterhead.  He claimed his office was in Mississauga ON, but that didn't explain the Manitoba or British Columbia phone numbers and other southwestern Ontario phone numbers which showed up on my call display.  Long story short, he refused to give anything identifying beyond "John Anderson".

The numbers called from were: 1-866-671-8059, 1-866-791-7164, 672-888-0948, 204-914-2405, 204-912-2512, 204-955-3158.  I believe they also tried from 1-866-607-4420, but I missed the call, so I can't be 100% certain.

In hindsight, this wasn't just one or two red flags, this was like the Six Flags of red flags, and I should have spotted it sooner.  Thankfully there are some amazing Koodo staff that are on the ball.  Just want to help keep others safe!

With so much fraud going on, you have to be vigilant.

You can always ask a cold caller to add any offer on your account and you can contact Koodo officially afterwards.

And of course never give any personal info over the phone when a stranger is calling you.

Adding another number they called from so others can be vigilant - 548-982-9521.  Claimed to be at their office in Mississauga ON, however the area code shows for west of there in the London ON, Windsor ON, Kitchener ON, and Guelph areas.

And I received a call again from the 866-791-7164 number, claiming they were at the Koodo/Telus main office in BC.  Yeah....sure....
