Huge $320 roaming charge by Koodo despite using an Airalo eSim while travelling

I had bought an Airalo eSIM for our trip to Japan between Feb 1 to Feb 20 and had it installed using the link that was sent to me through email upon arriving at the Narita airport. I added a new carrier on my phone for the local Japanese carrier and had turned off my primary data usage from Koodo. However, I had to turn on the roaming service in order to use the carrier provided by Airalo. When I returned to Canada, I was shocked to see a $320 charge for roaming by Koodo! I NEVER received any warning from Koodo saying “You are now using roaming service via Koodo” or “Thank you for using Koodo roaming”. Neither did I receive any messages about “ You will be charged $xx for using Koodo roaming service.”

I had purchase and used eSIM multiple times before and never once had a problem. I called Koodo 3 weeks ago and spoke to a real person (which btw is very difficult to set up after typing a whole bunch of rubbish with an AI). I had explained everything in detail and hoping they can waive my charge. I was offered a $50 discount but I rejected the offer and would like to appeal. The representative said someone will call me back after reviewing the issue. My husband told me that Koodo had charged $500 ($320 roaming fee plus the monthly plan) on our credit card today. They had NEVER called me back for any updates. I called the toll free number for Koodo customer service this afternoon. AI again. After spending almost an hour trying to find a way to talk to a real person, I have requested a call back for tomorrow and hopefully someone would care enough to call  me back. Being a Koodo customer for almost 20 years, I am very disappointed that they do not seem to care about their customers. I have proof of my eSIM purchase but no record of the name of the Japanese carrier I used because I thought everything was fine while I was there.

Did this help you find an answer to your question?

The roaming SMS from Koodo is a courtesy text though. It doesn’t promise that If you didn’t receive it,  you wouldn’t have to pay.  Anyway, did you receive any email from Koodo that you are roaming?

Regarding the roaming fee while in Japan, did you turn off data roaming as well for the Koodo line? As well, have you checked your selfserve to see which service did Koodo charge you for? Was it data or SMS or call?

Regarding the payment, if you had the payment method on file, they would use it to pay. If later, you can dispute the fee, they could refund or keep the amount for the next bill.

Unfortunately yes, while using airalo or other similar services, they are always roaming, so you need roaming enabled on your phone. You would have to shut off the Koodo sim in your phone connection settings to keep it disabled. If it’s a physical sim card, you could even take it out.

The Koodo Assist chat will quickly accept scheduling a callback. I’d suggest using it instead of attempting via 611 going forward.

I had used Halofly eSIM several times before and had absolutely no problems. Unfortunately I had to turn on roaming (there is only 1 on/off button for roaming  on my iPhone) in order to use the eSIM via the local Japanese carrier. I am not a tech savvy person but I had turned off my primary data usage and logged into the airport Wifi first before installing my eSIM. After that, I saw a Japanese sounding name as the data carrier on my phone so I assumed the eSIM must have been installed properly. Besides, I had not received any email or text message from Koodo saying I was using their roaming service. I did receive their generic text message saying Koodo roaming service can be used for $14 (can’t remember $14 or $16 now) per day though but that’s it and nothing else. So I would like to appeal and hope that they can waive the $320 fee or at least give me a credit as a goodwill of business as I have been their customer for many years.

Can you find out what caused the easy roam?  What triggered it daily?
