Is there a charge to go back to my previous phone as I like it so much better. I do not get all of my messages all the time even though notifications are on.
I do plan to keep my phone as a back up. My tab is paid off at end of December.

You can absolutely do that without any issue.
You can do it anytime, anywhere. Tab or no tab. That doesn’t impact the functionality of phones or of sim cards. The advantage of sim cards, and why they became standard, is because you can readily move between phones
