I don't believe Koodo to koodo texting has ever technically been 'free', but virtually every koodo plan includes unlimited texting and the same is likely true for Telus, which means it really doesn't matter.
Free calling between koodo users is only for customers on the same billing account, so you would no longer be able to do so if you were to move your number to Telus.

+4All of Telus’s plans right now are unlimited Canada wide calling and texting so you could call and text any Canadian number for free.
