US roaming charges triggered with data off

Hi everyone,

I was in the states for 6 days with data off. Thought I was good for not triggering the 15 dollar a day roaming charge, but apparently text messages also trigger roaming? I sent 7 texts (over 3 separate days).

As such, I was charged $48 dollars for 7 text messages!

To any rational person, this is insane.

@community @koodo is this normal business practice for Koodo?

As you might expect I’m upset and very close to cancelling and heading over to Freedom.

Any thoughts or engagement on this topic would be great!

Ryan

Hi @RyanW

We have looked into it and we can see there are indeed outgoing texts which triggred the roaming charges, we  recommend checking the usage section in self serve for more details.

With Easy Roam, any usage made, except for the incoming texts, triggers the daily roaming fee.

Easy Roam is ideal for higher daily usage, as it covers everthing, data, texts and calls made in the country you roam and Canada. If you plan to have very low usage, such as several texts, in this case it would be better to go pay per use (by removing the Easy Roam  add on). Nevertheless, it is very important to make sure you prevent any excessive usage when going pay per use, as the pay per use rates are much higher.

Another option in case you plan to use the phone in the US, is to check the available Easy Roam Travel Passes: https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/europe-easy-roam-travel-passes

Yes, outgoing texts trigger Easy Roam ($14/day US, even with data off); any tower ping, text, or call starts it. Receiving SMS is free though.

Check your detailed PDF bill (Self Serve, pages 3-4) for exact triggers/numbers.

To avoid next time: Airplane mode ON, data OFF, or remove SIM; data roaming toggle alone often fails.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Here’s my bill breakdown (below) and it looks like my ‘extra’ is international sms? (see red circle).

@Robert T  thanks, yes, please flag this post for a rep.

After looking closer at my bill, something doesn’t add up. The only thing I’m sure of is that I turned my data off before departing Canada and didn’t turn it back on until I was home.

Unfortunately, this dosn’t tell us what triggered Easy Roam. When you go on the usage page of the bill, what does it say?

Hi Flo Koodo,

Thanks for joining the chat, I understand what you’re saying… of course it doesn’t fix the fact that $48 for a few text messages is insane 😀

But additionally, it looks like my ‘extra’ is international SMS? See red circle in screenshot above.

Shouldn’t these text be free?

Unfortunately, the Easy Roam feature is triggered when you make or pick up a call, send a text message, or use data while abroad. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/easy-roam

It is true that incoming text messages are not subject to roaming charges, but @Flo Koodo mentioned that you sent a few outgoing text messages, which triggered the Easy Roam feature. Did you check your Self-Serve account?

You can either turn off Easy Roam to be charged at pay-per-use rates or remove your SIM card entirely from your phone to ensure that you will not receive any roaming charges in the future.

Thanks for joining the chat! @MilkyWay

Did you notice that it looks like I have an ‘extra’ on my plan?

Seems to me like this should allow me to send and receive texts for free while abroad?

@Flo Koodo

Looks like I should have free international text messages. See below…

That is only available for text messages sent from Canada. Anything else will be subject to roaming charges. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/canada-wide-and-international-messaging

LOL, oh no… 😂

So I will end up paying $48 for 7 text messages sent in the states?

I understand, but this is insane!

I apologize for being very direct here... if I’m stuck with this charge, I’ll head over to the mall tonight to switch providers. Seems Freedom mobile is a much better option for everything.

Maybe a dollar per message would be reasonable?

@Flo Koodo please reach out to me personally if there are any options for resolving this matter.

If you are asking for a 1 time exception, I suggest requesting a callback via Koodo Assist to speak with a rep.  Note that any exceptions will be solely at the rep’s discretion

@RyanW

Just to top up on Dennis response, the charges are indeed valid, however if you would like to dispute them further, you can use the link shared by Dennis above, or you can send us a message on Social media

Thanks @Dennis @Flo Koodo Obviously I don’t want to leave Koodo, but I can’t pay $48 dollars for a few messages, just out of principle 😀 I’ve requested a call back from Koodo assist.

Didn’t know you could do that. Thanks! Might have started there if I knew about it. The community seemed like the only option when I was looking for help earlier.

The community is a great starting place.  Most issues are typically resolved without the need for a callback.  If the issue requires a call back we will let you know.
