Koodo ripping me off with first bill

I received my first bill today after porting my numbers to Koodo on December 7th, and I am very concerned because the charges do not match what was clearly offered to me by the Loyalty department.

I was offered a $35 CAN/US/MEX 80GB plan, with:

  • $10 Auto-Pay discount

  • $5 Loyalty discount for 12 months

This means I was told I would be paying $20 per month for the first 12 months, and $25 per month afterward.

Based on this offer, I ported three lines and took the same plan on each line.

However, my first bill (which includes a partial month and the next full month) is $174.xx, which is much higher than expected.

After spending over 4 hours today chatting with Koodo Assist and then speaking with Loyalty, I was told the following:

  1. The discounts do not apply to the partial month because I changed my number, and the discounts were supposedly tied to the temporary number that was initially issued. This was never explained to me and does not make sense.

  2. The $10 Auto-Pay discount applies starting the second month, but the $5 Loyalty discount does not apply until the second invoice. Since my first invoice includes two months, I am effectively not receiving the loyalty discount until what is technically my third month.

None of this was disclosed when the plan was offered. I was clearly told that I would be paying $20 per month for the first 12 months. If these conditions had been explained, I would have reconsidered porting all three lines.

This feels misleading, and I am extremely disappointed with the lack of transparency and the time wasted trying to get a clear explanation.

What should i do now ? since Im being bill atleast 15$ more for each line so In total they charging me $45+taxes. Thinking this report to CCTS, any advise ?

If possible, can you post your page 3 and 4 of your pdf bill here where it shows the detail breakdown of the amount? Hide all personal information before posting please

Your first bill will always be higher than the subsequent ones, since it includes partial monthly charges from the date of activation until the start of your bill cycle, plus charges for your first full month of service. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/your-koodo-bill-after-youve-activated-a-new-account-or-added-a-new-line

It is true that partial billing credits are no longer applied to your bill. This policy was implemented a few months ago.

I would suggest you to wait until your next bill to see if the amount matches what you were offered. If it does not change, you can reply to this post and we can flag a rep to help you out.

Better communication is always better, but you still secured 12 months at $20, delayed a month, and $25 thereafter. Be aware though, that price increases after a year or less are becoming common for all carriers now unless you lock in a 2 year tab contract. I’m not saying it will happen, just that it could. The current deal as a new customer with carriers is $35/100GB with some carriers making the activaiton fee credited over 16 months, and others in the second month.

The first part how it was explained sounds weird, but it does remain true that first partial month of a bill doesn’t get discounts.

A CCTS complaint is your right, but unless you can show you were outright lied to, I’m not sure that it would be the appropriate course of action / an option that’ll result in anything.

I think this is what you have requested, as you can see there is no preauthorization discount on the DEC bill and January missing the loyalty $5 discount, its same for all three lines.

As long as your have Auto pay set up by bank by the time your bill was first generated, you should get the auto pay discount.  What is your billing cycle and when did you set up your auto pay by bank?

And yes credits do not apply for partial months.

Your first bill should include a partial month and 1 month ahead for postpaid.  If the loyalty discount comes during the 2nd bill, you will still get 12 months worth of the discount.  Is this something you still want to pursue?

I don’t care how other do the activation frees and etc, if Im not getting what I was offer over the phone, I have right to complaint and koodo/telus record all the calls and can review if needed, I’ll hold couple days before I file the complaint to CCTS.

I just filed one with telus here, hopefully that might be helpful.

@samcook

We have been unable to identify your account based on your community profile, we recommend logging out from the community and login back in using the “Log in via self serve” option in the community login page.

As @MilkyWay shared above, the first bill is usually higher due to the proration.

The autopay discount should start applying after the pre-authorized bank payments have been set up, as long as the plan is eligible with the autopay discount.

Credits and discounts do not apply indeed for partial billing periods.

We highly recommend checking the service agreement details which can be downloaded in self serve after the activation of the services, as this includes more details about the credits and discounts policy and also about the first bill proration https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/viewing-and-downloading-your-customer-service-agreements-csa

If you have further questions, kindly log in using the steps we shared above and we will look into the details further.

Ok I see your $5 credit next to your Connection fee credit.  So that looks correct.

I also see your Dec.28-Jan27 Auto pay discount.

To clarify, is your complaint about not getting your Nov.28-Dec27 auto pay discount?  If so, that is on your Nov bill

yes I have the preauthorization setup before I port in my cell numbers while SIMs were in transit  so 10$ credit should on the first month as well and loyality on the second month should be there as well not starting second invoice. Technically they owe me $40+.

You haven’t read initial question, $5 credit missing on the second month and pre authorization on the first month. I hope its clear to you now.

Define the 1st and 2nd month

I see $5 credit for the billing period from Dec.28- Jan.27. And the Auto pay for the same period.

Which month is this?  The first or the 2nd?

2nd, where do you see $5 credit for Dec.28- Jan.27 ??

Well, yes I did say it is your right?

OK so it sounds like they are saying porting a number over removes the discount? That doesn't really sound right at all. It only makes sense if it was still a partial month. Having even 1-27 Dec as is also shown in addition to 7-27 Dec are not full billing cycles.

For the second paragraph, “monthly and other charges Dec 28 to 27 Jan” shows a $5 credit applied alongside the activation charge credit applied in full. And the $10 PAP discount is applied for the same time period. So both discounts are applied for Dec 28 to Jan 27. But neither are applied to the earlier partial month from 7 Dec to 27 dec.

You are the second person who said $5 credit is there for Dec 28 0 Jan 27, where do you see that ? And yes, they should be able to move the discounts from temp phone number to mine manually for the first month and make the system to apply the discount once the port in is done. This is scam to me to bill someone as soon as the account is open without providing any service in actual. And funny enough during the black friday days when I got this plan, canada post was on partially strike and it took almost 2 weeks for me to receive the SIMs.

As mentioned earlier, partial billing credits are not provided. That is why the loyalty credit and auto-pay discount are showing up for the full billing cycle, but not the period from December 7 to December 27.

With regards to the SIM card, it does take around 7 to 10 business days. You can schedule a callback through Koodo Assist and speak with a rep to see if you can receive a credit for the days that you were charged while waiting for the SIM card in the mail, but this is entirely up to the rep and there are no guarantees. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/shipping-and-delivery

But that doesn’t reflect on the total monthly bill, $25 charges you see for the three lines, it should be $20 after the PAP and Loyality credit (Dec 27 - Jan 26)
Secondly, partial monthly changes you see here which is $24.50 that missing $10 PAP discount,
Any sense it makes to you for 1 month and 20days bill should be this much for three lines ?

Yeah i have always been open that it's a money grab to charge from the moment you start a plan even when you can't possibly receive a Sim card in time to use it. The advent of esim activation online at least can end that dirty practice.

I see Dennis has pointed it out to you where the credit is shown. And $49.50 looks correct per line from the detailed break down as its $35 - $10 PAP + $24.50 partial charge and that $7 charge got the $5 credit applied for the $2.26 you see 3 times. It got applied to that portion for some reason instead of the full billing cycle but you have both credits in the same bi with a full billing cycle

This is just the summary and does not contain the nuances of the proration.

The section under Mobile Services in the next page gives the details.

This is why your post here is more valuable.  It shows a $5 discount and the auto pay discount. for the period from Dec.28-Jan 27

$7 charges you see is for the temp numbers, either those should be removed or add $10 for PAP, that should resolve one issue.

Second, $25 still missing the loyality discount, which is there for the first month but no for the second month.

Yes I guess it’s for the period of 1 Dec to 7 Dec, and  for some reason the $5 promo credit was applied to that time period and not to the full billing cycle, making it $2 + tax. I say that because it’s supposed to be only on full billing cycles.

Were you able to log in with your self-serve account to this forum so that a rep on here can look through everything more closely?

Define the billing period for the first month.

When did you sign up for Koodo?  You ported your number on Dec.7 based on what you said above, but when did you join koodo?

I don’t think thats matter if you look at the screenshots I shared. What Im seeing is Koodo is billing me for 6 lines for the first month instread of three. again $7 charges you see is for the temp number and they applied the loyalty credit but did not give me the PAP.

I'm only seeing 3 lines. Where do you see 6? What you have shown for the table is 3 lines with charges from 1-6Dec in one row, and then charges from 7dec -27jan in the next row. That'll show 6 rows, but for 3 lines.

It definitely matters because you won't get the PAP discount applied to a partial billing cycle month. It's not your first 30 days, but the first full billing cycle. Koodo chose 28th to the 27th as your billing cycle. So when you get a full 28th to 27th time period is when the PAP discount gets applied. You will not be getting it for the 1-26 dec period, even though it is close to a full month. It's even under the category of “partial charges”in your detailed breakdown.

Hopefully a rep can clear up why the $5 was applied to the partial time frame and not only to the Full month, because I can see you're focused on the fact it was applied to a partial month so the PAP and 12 months must both apply to everything, but Koodo’s rules about it say that's not what they do.

Thank you everyone for the support, submitting the issue to Telus resolved my issue, a lady called this morning (finally talk to someone can speak and understand proper english) and after explaining everything, she immediately removed $7 charges for the temp numbers and applied $15 discount for both the months.

Now I can see bills for the 1 months and 20days is $101.xx for three lines.
