I have been in Mexico for a week, I’ve turned off data roaming. I have not enabled easy roam (I don’t want it). It’s my understanding that receiving texts is no-charge. Anything outbound is charged (or answering a voice call)

how can I confirm there aren’t any unexpected roaming charges being accumulated?  I don’t see anything in my account for “current usage” (which is expected) - I just want to confirm that there won’t be some huge surprise next billing cycle.

Any extra charges should show in your usage if there were any.

It would look something like the picture below:

This article talks about it a bit as well:

Ok thanks!  I was hoping that’s the case. Just wanting to make sure of no surprises.

So I just dug into the minutes details, and it looks like I’ve been dinged $16 three times.

One time for sure I accidentally answered the call, however the other two don’t make any sense.

Step 4 on the article above talks about checking your data and text (sent) usage on the days you identified Easy Roam was triggered (Step 3).

You should see corresponding text (sent) and/or data for those days in the usage tab.  With Text it is much easier as it will show the date and time of the sent message (consider time zone differences of course).  If it is data, it is only shown in large clumps of data used every few hours.

When I signed up for this account, the person said I would have to opt-in to any of this “easy roam” stuff.

Which ones should I removed?  I don’t plan on answering the phone at all - I don’t want random $16 daily charges that I don’t use.

The first 2 with the work Easy Roam are the Easy Roam add-ons.

But to clarify, removing easy roam does NOT stop roaming. Removing Easy Roam just ensures all roaming charges are pay per use charges, so be very careful with your cellphone usage.

When you have the Easy roam add-on, it is only triggered if you use Calling, send a text (sms), or use data.

Another customer on the community recently saw his first easy roam charge and removed easy roam.  But his phone was still unknowingly using data, resulting in a $100 charge for pay per use data instead of the capped $16 easy roam charge for the day.

Here’s what I’m seeing.  The July 9th entry is the only time I actually answered the phone (by mistake).  All the other entries just seem to be arbitrary.

So July 12 and 14 shows Easy roam is triggered, hence in the details it shows ER/VC (Step 3).

Now for Step 4, you need to go to the messaging tab to see if you have sent messages on July 12 and 14.  You need to explain the entries in the messaging usage screen to see if it was a sent or received message

Thanks for the reply - nope, no sent messages.
It’s my understanding (when I signed up) that incoming messages are not chargeable.

Have you only turned off data roaming or did you turn off your data as well?

9. How can I avoid roaming charges when travelling?

When you arrive at your destination, you’ll receive a Welcome SMS notification explaining your roaming options and the rates, if you choose to use your device. This doesn’t mean that you’re being charged for roaming.

If you want to avoid roaming charges altogether, simply turn OFF data and data roaming in your device settings, and don’t make calls, answer incoming calls, or send outgoing text messages.

Data roaming has been turned off the whole time.  Even before I left.

Data Roaming AND the data toggle.

Both need to be turned off to avoid charges.

On iOS there’s just the data roaming switch for the cell plan.  Pretty sure there’s no other setting.

Next, go to the Data tab and see if you have any data used for June 12 & 14.

Since we dont see any texts sent or calls for June 12 and 14, my expectation would be that data was used by your phone on these days.

Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data, Off

I can’t do that - I have a SIM (mexico) and eSIM (Koodo).  I need to use the data with the SIM.
