Hi there, I was travelling in mexico for a month and used an e-sim while away. I had my roaming cellular data turned off,  and had the e-sim as my primary, but kept my phone number active as I still wanted to receive texts and incoming calls. From what I had read online I would only have the easy roam turned on when data was used and since I had turned this off, I assumed I would not get charged the $15 per day. Here is where I’m not clear what I did wrong. I received a 1 min phone call that I answered while away. (it was a restaurant confirming a reservation). When I got my bill, that call some how triggered the easy roam and I was charged the $15.  I was under the assumption that this charge would have come through as a pay-per use .

Can you provide assistance as to what I did incorrectly, and what I need to do so that this doesn’t happen again. My hunch is that I should remove the easy roam, but perhaps there are other options.

Thank you!

For all information regarding Easy Roam here’s a good place to start :

As for the question you asked you get charged whenever you use your phone (SMS, text or data). There’s not really a way to get chraged PPU while keepiing Easy Roam. It’s one or the other. To avoid future charges, you can either disable Easy Roam before your next trip and rely on PPU charges for any usage, or you can try to minimize your usage while abroad to avoid triggering the daily fee.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any further questions or if there's anything else I can assist you with.

You will be charged for easy roam when you use any data, send any sms, or use any talk.  So taking a call to your Koodo line will have triggered easy roam for that day.

Thanks so much! Robert T, can you guide me how to turn off Easy roam?

You go to your self-serve. Select “Manage Plan and add-ons” - > Manage add-ons → tap/click on the x besides the two easy roams in the add-ons list.
