I received a text saying I was now roaming and easy roam was activated. I was not in the States or even close to the border. Will I be charged?

Possibly. Only getting the message that easy roam is on is not a charge itself. When you get your bill, and if you see that you're charged, please do let us know so a rep can confirm and correct it.
For future reference you can set your phone to manual network selection mode and select Koodo from the list that populates. Your phone will only attempt to connect to Koodo. You can also turn off data roaming to lower the chance of getting a ccharge if you do somehow connect.
