I've had the $70 30GB data plan with Koodo for the last little while. At times I've thought my monthly bills were high, but haven't had the time to really investigate as to why. This past month, I've incurred a $260 additional charge for data usage on top of the $70 plan and 6 top-up charges. I'm currently without internet service which is why I have the high limit data plan. Can someone explain to me where the additional charges would stem from from if after my 30GB are up, the top-ups kick in, then no data capabilities until the new cycle begins? It's not a roaming charge, as I've not left the country.

If I recall correctly, after 6 top ups you’d have to use pay per use data which is where the extra fees would come in.

Have you downloaded your bill to take a look? It should provide a breakdown of charges.

As well, have you looked at new plans recently? You’re paying way too much given what you’re getting in return. You should be able to easily get double or triple that amount of data for cheaper.

Hi @IFortier17

We have looked into it and we can see that shock free data text notifications have been sent to your number with the top ups and then the pay per use data options, along with short info about the overages incurred.

More info about shock free data works can be found here https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/shock-free-data

We see that you changed your plan in the meantime in self serve.

Note that when you change your plan, your new data is pro-rated.

Allan M - Thanks for the reply. Once the 6 top ups ran out, I went without data. So as far as I can tell, I paid for the base amount on my plan, then paid for each top up, but paid for additional data without using additional data. Unless I'm misunderstanding what constitutes additional data?

These (image below) should have been your top ups after data ran out on your plan.

How did you pay for additional data that you did not use?  Did you get a separate, permanent data add-on as well?  Or did you just text in for more data like below?

@IFortier17

The additional pay per use data overages were on top of the plan and the data top ups. There was usage made at pay per use rates and SMS notifications were sent to your number when pay per use data was purchased ($13/100MB). We recommend checking the details in the Usage section in self serve.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Flo Koodo - Right, but if I'm charged for the top ups, use those, then don't use any more data, where do the additional data charges come from? Category 1 - base plan (paid), category 2 -top ups (paid), category 3 - additional data charges (paid, but none used beyond categories 1 and 2). What does additional data charges include that I used?

I paid for the top ups using the text options, and also using the network link through the phone for a total of 6 top ups. Beyond that, my data was paused until the end of the cycle. I have no data add-ons under the add ons subcategory on my bill.

That's the thing, I didn't use any pay per use options after the top ups ran out.

I did download and go over the bill. It was the additional data charges entry that raised the red flag.

I switched plans just before posting my question.

@IFortier17

We have double checked on our end and according to the usage and the SMS notifications sent to your number, additional data was purchased and used beyond the plan and the data top ups, at pay per use rates.

Can you please check the SMS notifications that you got and also the usage section in self serve for the period January 9th to January 14th? This is the period when additional data was purchased and used, based on the usage details we see on our end.

I would also take screenshots of the usage page on self serve
