I turned on easy roam and was in the USA November 29th but only for the day. I have been back in Canada ever since but still got charged another day of roaming on November 30th.

Easy Roam bills by calendar day in the local country, not by how long you’re physically there, and a new day can be triggered by even tiny usage (like a quick text or background data) after midnight local time in the US.
Here’s how this likely broke down:

  • On Nov 29 (USA local time) you connected to a US network and used a chargeable service (call, outgoing text, data, or voicemail ping), which triggered the first Easy Roam day.
  • After midnight in the US (now Nov 30 there), your phone must have again connected to a US tower and used something billable, so the system started a second day of Easy Roam, even if you were already heading back or thought you were done.
  • Any outgoing text, call, data, or voicemail activity while connected to a US network will start a day; only receiving SMS is free. Background data (apps updating, email sync, Wi‑Fi calling, visual voicemail, etc.) can also do it.

In Self Serve > Usage on your Nov bill, look at the detailed breakdown for Nov 29–30 and see: exact time stamps for roaming usage and whether it shows US voice, text, or data entries on the 30th.

To avoid this in future trips near the end of a day, once you are fully done using your phone in the US, turn Airplane Mode ON while still there, or power off the phone until you are clearly back on a Canadian network.

I'll flag a rep to look into the charges, it probably just pinged a USA tower by mistake after you crossed the border.

To avoid this in future when close to the border, I suggest you check out the article in the link below.

Just make sure you're logged into the community using your self serve credentials and a rep should be able to take a peak. Note that they may not be able to credit the charge as it has been longer than 30 days, though there sometimes can longer refund disputes with roaming charges depending on when they're posted.

I was 100% back in Canada before midnight and was no where near the states once it turned to the 30th. I don’t think that it is fair that you can be charged with extra roaming charges because it thinks you might have been near the states. I have had many many roaming charges when I am not in the states and I’m very tired of having to constantly monitor all these extra charges. I feel like with the technology these days it should be very clear if I was in the states or in Canada.

Hi @Mackenzier1828

We have looked into it and have been able to remove this second charge since the usage appears only on the 29th, feel free to check the details in self serve when you get the chance.
