Question

billed for texting I didn’t make

I have been charged for a few texts on ***10 as roaming charges. These were made on WhatsApp while at my home. The same texts were sent around the same time to the same number but weren’t charged. I need to know how these texts billing that were sent to the same person on WhatsApp using my data works?

You were likely charged because some WhatsApp messages may have been sent as SMS if your phone’s “Send as SMS” option was enabled and cellular roaming was active, even if you used WhatsApp and Wi-Fi. SMS messages go through the cellular network and incur roaming charges, unlike WhatsApp data messages sent solely over Wi-Fi which are free. Manually disabling “Send as SMS” and roaming data can prevent this.

Thanks Robert,

Forgot to add that I always use Wifi when I’m home as my data is switched off. Also, I’ve confirmed through settings that “Send as Messages” is switched off.
So unless I have been outside using the data for cellular it’s very unlikely. Also, a few messages weren’t charged and others were is a bit uncommon to understand.
Anyway would you know if it’s possible to figure out if that really happened or we are assuming it.

Thanks again

WhatsApp does not use SMS to send messages.
I recommend checking your default messaging app to see if any messages were actually sent through that channel.
Also, how much were you charged? It’s possible the source of the issue lies elsewhere (accidental roaming while staying in Canada?)

There isn’t any direct number to call. If you insist on calling, you will have to schedule a call back using the Digital Assist. However, Rep is working on the forum as well. They might be able to adjust if the bill is incorrect.

If possible, can you post a snapshot of the bill where it showed the roaming fee? Hide all personal information before posting please.

I’m not sure how to do that. I’ll have to figure it out.
Ohhh posting my phone number wasn’t smart of me which I realized it much later. Is there a way to have it removed from the chat or at least greyed out?

I’ll flag a rep to assist with that. They might well comment on the matter as well. If you don’t find it satisfactory, you can opt to Support Homepage | Koodo Mobile through here for Koodo Assist, although it’s now going to default to the messaging option for billing issues, which isn’t live talk either at first

When you go over the original post, do you see three dots in the right corner? If so you can choose edit and remove the number. If not, the rep can remove it once they look at the post. 🙂👍

@Rishi

We have looked into it and according to the usage we see from our end, there are indeed a few regular texts message recorded, which used the cellular network to be sent.

If they don’t appear in your texts usage on your phone, we recommend scheduling a call back with the virtual assist, so a rep from the technical support team can further investigate.
