Question

Are there any fees related to paying off a tab and can you change your plan back to a cheap one?

I have been looking at getting a new phone but I am not really in the position of adding $40 per month to my expenses. With holiday money I was thinking of getting the phone on a tab and then paying it off right away.

My question is this, is there a fee involved with paying the tab off right away and would I be able to downgrade my plan back to a bring your own phone plan once the tab is paid off? I am currently on a bring your own phone plan and if I want a new phone I have to change my plan.

Thank you!

Which phone model are you looking into? If you have enough money for it, have you looked into the option to buy it outright elsewhere? It might be cheaper that way.

You don’t have to pay any extra fee if you would like to pay off the Tab right away. However, you might not change your plan to a BYOD after that. You still have the “Tab bonus” on the line and that would prevent you from getting a BYOD.

I was looking into getting the Samsung S25 model. I estimated that with the tab of $20 per month for 2 years would be $480 in total for the tab, not including the bonus tab. I really can’t pay for the full price of a new phone.

I have looked at used options on Amazon and local phone stores as options, but both are looking to be between $630 - $800 CAD to buy.

To confirm, I would not be able to downgrade the plan while the tab bonus is still active correct?

That is correct — you can only switch to another “tab-eligible” plan.

Sometimes there are good promotions that let you switch to a better plan, but it’s always best to secure a good plan at the time of activation

If you cannot afford the combined price of the new plan + a S25, or if it seems so expensive, you might have to look at cheaper options still.

The Pixel 9 has gotten fairly good reviews, and is currently 0 dollars on tab and outright price. Then you’d only have to look at paying for the $50 dollar plan vs your current plan cost. It should show up as an option when you have the phone in your cart and you choose a new plan.

That might be a  better option for sure. I was able to confirm that if I did proceed with my idea of paying off the tab right away that is considered “breaking the contract” and any deals go away and the entire phone cost would go on tab. I did not proceed with this option.

Thank you all for your answers!

That is correct. The tab subsidy amount must still be paid. Paying it off early still means you must wait the full 24 months before you can purchase again without paying off the subsidized amount as well.
