Received a call on January 2,  2025 from 1 (778) 534-4349 claiming to be from Telus (something) saying I won a phone.

They then proceeded to ask identifying questions – email, address, birthday – though, in regard to the latter two, not necessarily all of the information (unit # & birth year). Then they asked for a PIN number which, in my opinion, was the deal breaker and after I balked and suggested that Telus/Koodo say they would never ask for that they eventually hung up.

Reverse lookup suggests the number is part of the Shaw network.

Anyone else get a call from that number that can verify it being a scam?

Hi there,

This would be a scam. Phone companies will not give away phones for free and you're correct, unless you agree to a phone sale with koodo/telus they will not ask you the verification questions. Especially when you started to ask questions and they hung up, this is a bit of a give away.

If you receive a call from koodo or Telus, it will commonly be a 1-866, 1-844, 1-833 or 1-877 number. Chris from koodo had actually made a great article outlining this and more in the link below. I suggest you give it a read. I hope this helps 🙂 sorry this happened to you.

Thanks Oliver, that’s a great resource!

Hopefully an email address (not important one), my birth year and condo unit aren’t enough to do whatever they plan/planned to do.

Too bad about the phone, though.
