Your Samsung 20 FE is on the list of compatible VoLTE devices.
Hello, Yes, the Samsung works fine but would like to know why the Huawei P20 isn't. It was purchased in 2018 and has the VoLTE capability. Honestly, of all the cell phones I have owned over the years, it was my all time favorite and still works beautifully. Only hick-up is telus/koodoo won't offer WiFi calling with it while I had that ability back when I was with Rogers...
Was the P20 purhcased from Koodo? Koodo has whitelisted phones from VoLTE that aren’t sold in the Canadian market in general it seems. They haven’t said it, but in the last few years, suddenly phones that used to have wifi calling and volte are no longer compatible. A couple other carriers do it and a couple other do not. Unfortunately, Koodo is on the former.
Thanks for the feedback. No, I am a fairly recent Koodoo customer so did not buy the phone from them. Don't recall who the carrier was at the time i purchased the phone, but I know for sure Rogers provided it when I was with them. :(
Which version of Android is your P20 running?
You can find the Android version by going to Settings > About phone or device.
The reason for asking is that there have been many reports of Huawei stopping support for the P20 and P20 Pro, leaving many users stuck on Android version 10. The latest version of Android is 15. I had the P30 Lite; this model also faced the same support issue. Some phones can operate long after one or two Android system updates and rely on bug fixes and security patches thereafter.
Security patches fix security vulnerabilities found in the Android operating system. Bug fixes help to improve software reliability and may enhance the overall user experience. Without security patches, bug fixes, and an outdated Android OS, the P20 could be at greater risk of becoming compromised.
It might be worth looking into Koodo’s offerings, either brand-new or certified pre-owned devices. Most, if not all, phones offer VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling.

Hello Rikkster,
Thank you for your reply. I just checked and you are correct, the phone has the 10.0.0 version of Android. I looked for the updates and the most recent update was July 2020. So you are saying that this is the reason why provides no longer support them? Does the 'vulnerability' cause an issue with the phone company or mostly an annoyance for the user?
It shouldn’t be the reason that VoLTE/wifi calling isn’t working, because the OS version isn’t tied to the feature. The issue is still likely that Koodo doesn’t have that particular model whitelisted, if you have VoLTE in your add-ons and it still won’t work. You will even see on the Koodo list that the P20 Pro is listed, but not the P20. It’s possible that is the cutoff.
What Rikkster is saying is that being 4 year out of date, it will have accumulated many security vulnerabilities that aren’t being patched anymore. You run the risk of potential security issues using any phone or device (includes any computing device) that no longer gets security updates to address security vulnerabilities that are discovered. It’s up to you at the end of the day, as individual apps do still get security updates. I still retain some older phones I use from time to time, but I don’t keep banking apps on them, and such. It’s ultimately up to you.
You’re welcome, @Callimico. It’s Huawei that is no longer supporting the P20 and P30 Lite as they were tasked with pushing Android system updates. This was a worldwide issue. You may also recall Google banning Huawei over alleged spying concerns. It’s possible wireless providers gave up on Huawei due to lengthy Android system update delays, which require extensive testing on the wireless provider side before the update is released, and the alleged spying concerns, but I cannot say this for certain.
A vulnerability can be more than just an annoyance to users, especially if their phone is compromised, such as in cases of identity theft or fraud.
I hear you, but like I said, I really liked the phone, very easy to use and intuitive. I probably would have bought another Huawei if it hadn't been for the Google issues. That being said, the phone is currently being used by my 13 year old son - his first cell phone. I have a low cost plan for him, unlimited calls and texts. He can use Wi-Fi when it's avaliable (aka school or home), but the main purpose for it is for him to be reached by phone or text by me or whoever else needs to get a hold of him. Koodoo does provide a calling plan for this model, but not the Wi-Fi calling. If it wasn't because of where we live, I wouldn't really care, but because Koodoo or no one for that matter, provides functional network service, we rely on Wi-Fi calling. I just don't get why it's a big deal, but thanks for your input. I would buy myself a new one and hand down my current Samsung if it wasn't for the fact I apparently will have to upgrade my own plan as well. :(
I understand, and I also enjoyed using my P30 Lite! The Fongo Mobile app could be an alternative to Wi-Fi Calling for now. It operates over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and you receive a free local Canadian phone number. The app offers paid add-ons if you decide your son needs additional features. While the app may not be as advanced as Wi-Fi Calling, it is functional, and I have been using it as a reliable backup for years.

Thank you. Will look into it. Really appreciate you taking the time to share.
The Boxing Day deals are likely going to be slightly more expensive than the Black Friday ones for phones but the plans are the same prices again. You could see what you can get to compare the costs, if you’re contemplating a phone. You can also check your self-serve when you go to “change my plan” if there’s any offers that look appealing and are compatible with a phone on tab. Maybe things will be better closer to Boxing Day, but Black Friday has overtaken Boxing Day for the best deals for years now. Because IMO the best deal right now is the Pixel 9 for 16.67 per month on tab ($400 + tax) although there are cheaper options. Unless the Galaxy S24FE goes down to 0 or 5 dollars on tab again, I’m not seeing anything really appealing right now.
And yeah, it’s too bad about Huawei. I had a P20 pro and liked it. I’d love to get their current lineup.
