Hello,

I have moved out of Canada for a little while and discovered that my prepaid service does not work. I would like to keep my number and transfer it to a new service because it is tied to a lot of 2FA services I use.

However to port my number out I see I need to receive an SMS code on my Koodo number. Not being able to receive these texts on my Koodo number is exactly the reason I want to port the number out!

Does anyone know if there are any alternatives for me? Hopefully I won’t be forced to just drop my number entirely, as that would be a massive inconvenience and potentially even a security risk.

This is going to be an issue, as Koodo Prepaid only has roaming in the US. If you have your sim card with you, that’s another issue, as you can’t get someone to do it for you to approve a port out.

I thnk your most practical option, assuming you will be out of country long enough, is to get someone in Canada to help by getting a Koodo prepaid sim and swap sims:

You can do the 2FA by SMS or email. You can select the email option.

Once that’s done, you can port out to Koodo postpaid if you want to stay with Koodo, or you can use any other phone/VoIP option to regain use of your line while out of Canada.

Thanks very much for the response. It would be nice if there was another way to authenticate myself, such as over email. It seems like there is literally no reasonably convenient option, but maybe I can make one of these work.

Until then, I remain the uselessphoneenjoyer :)
