I currently pay monthly for a tablet (Huawei) I've had it a little over a year. My boyfriend recently came to me and told me he can't use his tablet cause it won't update. Apparently there hasn't been new updates for this tablet in a couple years. So basically I'm paying monthly for a tablet that is no good to us. He can't use Netflix etc. What can I do?

Judging by this thread, it doesn’t seem like huawei is planning to update the device.

How much is currently left on the tab to pay off?

I still have over $100 to pay. Apparently my boyfriend has had this issue for a couple months now and failed to tell me about it.

Did netflix used to work? Does nothing work at all or only netflix?

Nothing. Prime video, discovery+ etc doesn't work as the tablet is outdated so he can't update any of the apps. He was using it at work in the evenings (rotational worker) now it's just a paper weight

No apps or no streaming apps? You’ve only named off streaming apps so far. I know some huawei and xiaomi tablets have had issues with streaming, but the mediapad runs android 8 and it should stream still. That’s old but it should still work in general.

First I’d try a factory reset. Then you can try unlocking the bootloader and putting on a different version of android or reinstalling the huawei firmware. You don’t have to be very tech savvy but it takes a little bit of more knowledge or reading carefully, but it’s quite doable.
