I’m travelling in the US for a few months and planning to have my phone on airplane mode for the majority of the trip to avoid daily roaming fees. If I subscribe to visual voicemail will I be able to access my voicemails over wifi?

Visual voicemail needs cellular data to be on to receive. It doesn't work with WiFi. So if you are not roaming and your data is off , your visual voicemail wouldn't work.
