Hi there,
So yes it is a koodo reps job to call koodo customers to attempt to make sales over the phone / offer promotions. However, it is good you stay vigilant as fraudsters do attempt to impersonate telecom sales people a lot. This one sounds real but you're right, it is hard to know if they're a real rep over the phone.
A few hints to tell if its real is the rep will usually state that the call is recorded and will know things about your account such as your current rate plan, recent bill amount, when you last upgraded, and will not pressure you further if you decline the offer. I hope this helps!
I didn’t do the right thing. I actually spoke without knowing whether the call was genuine. With today’s technology, that’s all that’s needed to hijack one’s voice.
Given the modern day threats, I think that Koodo would being doing the right thing by not calling their customers for promotions.
One can of course not take any calls from unrecognized numbers, but sometimes, I forget. As well, sometimes I *am* expecting a call from a number that I may not recognize.
I asked not to be called years ago and it seems that such a request has a shelf life. The agent who called was kind enough mark me as a do not call customer again. But again, it seems inappropriate to be engaging in this kind of promotion considering the threats today.
I do appreciate your confirmation that the call is likely to be genuine.
I have commented on this forum several times how I am disappointed that Koodo continues to use sales people to call customers. They call and ask for personal information to verify that it is you - yet we are warned again and again not to give out personal information on the phone. So many people are scammed every day by fraudsters using these techniques.
There’s also the prickly issue that in order not to have them capture your voice, you have to hang up on them rudely without explanation. How natural is that for most people? And how horrible that must be for the genuine sales people? Come on, Koodo, there must be a better way.
