Now guaranteed there's phones that are not compatible with the Koodo/Telus cellular network, but in this case the Samsung A06 is compatible as it does use 4g FDD Lte B5(850) but does not support all four 4g lte spectrums that they use so it is deemed incompatible and unsupported even though the Koodo network uses the 4g FDD Lte B5(850Mhz) band. The only reason this would be is it is not offered by them. So as a dual sim "world" phone that does 2g gsm, 3g wcdma, 4g fdd lte and 4g tdd lte (i won't go into specifics on the differences) one will get charged in this case the legacy 3g add on due to it being "incompatible" even though it uses the 4g B5(850) spectrum. A little short sighted in my eyes.
As far as I know, the incompatibility issue is due to the VoLTE restriction, not because of the lack of certain bands. When someone use those “non-supported” phone, they have to use 3G network for calling, hence the 3G extra fee. I am not a fan of that fee either.
Anyway, they are trying to shut 3G network down in the near future. US carriers already did that.
I would tend to think the manufacturers nowadays have most of their devices VoLte capable. In the case of the A06 it is VoLte capable. I think it may be due to the absolute cornucopia of phones a manufacturer like Samsung make and any provider does not want or need to certify every phone that a provider makes.
Koodo has whitelisted phones for VoLTE. That’s the issue. Koodo didn’t used to have one, or there were far fewer phones on a list. So now you’re going to have issues with most phones not sold in Canada, unfortunately.

Ok but are you able to enable VoLTE on your phone when you are connected to LTE? If you are unable to, then the phone is not compatible with what Koodo allows for VoLTE, hence the “No VoLTE fee”
