I am leaving the country for a few months and wondering what to do with my phone plan. I plan on using Airalo while I am travelling because it is more cost-effective, but I would like to know if I can still use my phone number to send and receive iMessages if I put my plan on seasonal hold. I understand that I cannot access any of my Koodo plan features while it is paused, but because I will have access to WiFi as well as data (from Airalo), I am wondering if iMessage will still work with my phone number. I apologize if this is a dumb question; I am not too good with this kind of thing. Thanks!

This is an interesting question. I know that imessage works anywhere in the world for free if you use wifi. When roaming, and you want to avoid roaming, you would turn off the option to send/receive imessages as SMS. In the case of a seasonal hold, your number still exists, but you don’t receive/send anything. I assume whatsapp would still function, for example, as it doesn’t actively use the number. If you’re not using SMS, I would assume that you can.

But my further understanding about imessage is that it needs an active phone number to work for over 30 days, but isn’t consistent about it either. You shouldn’t turn off the Koodo line sim in your sim card settings when you’re abroad to continue to use imessage.

If you like, I can flag a rep to confirm in this particular case.

Hi @MylesM it likely requires an active line like the RCS option or a third party service like WhatsApp. Even if messages are sent only via Wi-Fi an active number is still needed.

You may be able to use the iMessage option if under Send & Receive you delete your phone number and use an email address instead.

Hi Goran,

Thank you so much for your reply! If you could flag a rep, that would be great.

Hi again @MylesM no flagging necessary, I’ve already responded above. An active number is likely needed.
