I am thinking about getting the homephone but use international calling cards frequently to talk too relatives overseas. I usually have to dial a Canadian toll free number, would calling cards be able to work. Also if I want to port my landline over, do I have contact my current provider and let them know, or can I just port over like that.

Yes, if the toll free for international calling card is a 1800 number or a Canadian number, then the WHP should work fine.
You don't have to notify your current provider, once you had the service with Koodo you can port your number into Koodo selfservice https://www.koodomobile.com/help/moving-your-phone-number
