I switched to 5G but my Samsung Galaxy still shows LTE.  Should this change to 5G or do I need to make changes to my settings?

It will only change to 5G if/when you are within range of a 5G tower.

Could you use this coverage map and let us know if you’re in a 5G area?

Yes it says I am in a 5G tower area, at least it showed purple.

Which Samsung phone do you have? Did you check that in settings, connections, mobile networks, that your network modr selected includes 5G?

Userlevel 1

I have a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G.  The only thing in my mobile network is LTE, WCDMA and GSM

Have you tried restarting your phone, removing and reinserting your sim, resetting your network settings, and/or seeing if you have any updates available?

Userlevel 1

Yes I have removed the SIM card, restarted the phone, checked for updates and reset my network settings.

I'll flag a rep to see if there's anythijg on their end. That's about all you can do on yours.

Do you think I might need a new SIM card to enable 5g?

Do you think I might need a new SIM card to enable 5g?

Very possible. How old would you guess your SIM card is?

Userlevel 1

It will be 2 years old in November.

Hi @Babs

The sim card shouldn’t be the problem. We have sent you a  PM, so we can further look into it, please check your inbox when you get the chance.

I received a private message from koodo but I’m not sure how to respond. Help!

Koodo has asked me to turn off my phone for 10 minutes and let them know when I have so they can do a reset.

I don’t see where I can respond to a private message.

In the top right of the community click your icon, then click private messages. You should see the message and be able to respond there!

I see where you mean but when I go into private messages and click on it all I see is show conversation and when I click on that it just takes me back to the private message with no place to respond.

Hi @Babs

Can you please try again?

Userlevel 1

I will turn off my phone now

Userlevel 2

I’m having the same problem with an S20 FE 5G and have gone through the same troubleshooting steps with no luck

Userlevel 1

Yes it’s probably the worst phone I have ever owned.  I will be glad to get a newer model soon and hope it works better than the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G.

Have you tried to follow these steps? https://www.helpforsmartphone.com/public/en/samsung/galaxy-s20-fe-5g/android-10/guides/24/Switch-between-3G-4G-5G-Samsung-Galaxy-S20-FE-5G

Userlevel 1

Yes I did and I don’t even have those options shown on my phone. Only options I have are LTE/WCDMA/GSM and WCDMA/GSM.

Userlevel 2

Yep, same steps, and none of the options that show up include 5g

@Babs, @m_i_rite Did you purchase your S20 FE 5G phones through Koodo?

I stumbled across a post in the Rogers community that mentioned if the phone is not purchased through the carrier, it will not have access to 5G.

Rogers & 5G

Samsung smartphones in Canada typically have a W designation at the end of the model number. An S20 FE 5G sold by Bell, Rogers or TELUS would have the same model number as Koodo. Phones not sold by Koodo may prevent the use of 5G. This is because the IMEI number is not registered in their inventory. The model number for the Canadian variant S20 FE 5G is SM-G781W. The model number should be in Settings > About Phone (or Device).

If everything checks out with the model number and the S20 FE 5G was purchased through Koodo, there may be a glitch in the phone’s firmware. A future update may be able to resolve the issue.

Userlevel 1

Thanks.  Yes I did purchase the phone through Koodo and it does have SM-G781W.

If the reps here are  still assisting via PM, and there’s no solution, it may well come to a tech support ticket needing to be opened. I’m not sure what’s up with some phone models and 5G not showing up. I could speculate numerous issues with the 5G launch by Koodo. I’m guessing related to it being a reactionary move as other 2nd tier flanker carriers have gone ahead with 5G.

I do know that someone with an iphone here had a similar issue but it was resolved with a coincidental phone update. Perhaps that’s what it’ll have to be for the somewhat older phones. I am currently using a nnon-Koodo phone but I’ll put ym sim card in older 5G compatrible phones I have that are from Koodo. I’m curious if it’ll hae an issue like your S20 FE

Thanks all, I’ve switched back to 4G until I get a new phone in the fall.
