improving tab and phones offered


The Koodo tab should become bigger for older members. It should also cover phones that Koodo doesn't offer, such as the Nexus 4. It is not normal to force customers to buy lame iPhones or selectively bad android phones. In any case, lower the data prices. 1GB should cost 35$ / month, never more.

Koodo can't offer a tab on phones they do not carry, that just really makes no sense it's like saying Honda has financing for their cars but I want a Nissan and Honda should give you financing to buy the Nissan you want. As far as data I don't know what provider your looking at but with Koodo it's $20 for 1gb of Data on a talk and text plan. What do you mean selectively bad Android phones? They carry the Galaxy S3 and at the end of the month they will have the Galaxy S4 which is the top phones of 2012 & 2013.The Galaxy S4 is twice the phone the Nexus 4 is. If you want the Nexus 4 then buy it from the Google Plays tore where it's much cheaper than any provider is able to sell it for and is cheap at only $350 so there's no need to even use a tab, and since it's a Nexus it's factory unlocked and will work with Koodo right out of the box.

totally agree, Antoine if you want more selection, you are free to look at Telus.

Well like most people already mentioned, you are already getting a subsidized price for high-end smartphones (eg. SIII 550$ with koodo, 650$ everywhere else, ACEIIX 150$, others 250$, z10 550$, everywhere else $650). PLUS, you can use your koodo tab to get those.

a subsidized price doesn't mean it's good. You mention the S3 for 550$, 100$ lower than elsewhere. Guess what: the S3 is not even worth 450$, just look at its specs. I know the S4 will be out soon, but brace yourself for another overpriced product in the selection. When a majority of customers agree to be ripped off, it happens. Or, like now, it keeps happening.

For its price. I am using the N4 to write this, and I can confirm that Samsung is completely ripping people off with those prices, just like apple does. My parents have the newest iPhone and Galaxy, so I got the chance to try them both. Also, GS4 is not worth more than twice N4’s price, where the hell are you coming from.

That was quite offensive Antoine. We can all disagree, but "where the hell are you coming from" was uncalled for. I agree certain phones are too expensive, however, we live in a free-market environment and can always opt to use our wallets to vote. Don't like Samsung's pricing on the SGS4? No biggie, just don't buy it. Same for the iPhone, or any product in existence that our lives don't depend on (and I mean essentials like food and shelter, cellphones are not part of this). We use Koodo for the same reason. Many people don't like the Big3's monthly pricing and use their offspring (Koodo/Fido/Virgin) because their plans are cheaper. Also, providing tab for phones Koodo doesn't sell is counter-productive. When you get a tab, you basically get a $150 interest-and-tax-free loan. But Koodo likely sets its phone pricing to make a (small) profit, so when you get a tab, Koodo still makes some profit (because you still bought a phone through them). If they give you out a tab without you buying a phone, they're basically handing out $150 in cash to you just because you asked for it, without the opportunity to cash in the device-sale profit. I can't see that happening at all.

Thanx Sunny Daisy. I'm a retired old timer (18 months, lol) around here now, but like any self-respecting retired factory worker, I still sneak in from time to time because you can always pull the guy out of Koodo's forum, but you can't really take Koodo's forum out of the guy, hehehe.

Beautiful TopperCNC, the only thing that I would like to add is that Koodo actually doesn't profit at all from the sale of the phones. When you factor in storage, shipping (to the stores or to the customer if purchased online) and commission to the dealers, Koodo actually loses money on the phones. The idea is that Koodo makes that money back on the monthly bills

@Curtules: hmm.. seeing Koodo's plans cost less already, I find it a little hard to believe they don't make a profit on the sale of a phone. If that's the case, then I stand corrected!

Ya Honda Makes the cars but they also have a dealership that sells the cars which are privately owned and they still have to buy the cars from Honda so it is a valid example. It's called a franchise and you buy into it and buy certain products from your supplier, your not going to offer financing for someone to buy products being sold by another supplier.

@ TopperCNC I have a friend working at Samsung Canada. I can tell you this much. No phone company makes money/profit by just selling phones. They make it back on the monthly services people sign up for. All the profits on the phones are taken by the manufacturers. At times phone companies actually selling the phones for less than what they buy it for.

@Chris: Thanx for the explanations. I kinda guessed that device-sale profits were unlikely to be high, but I would not have thought them to be zero either. The N4 is obviously an exception that I doubt we'll see again (mind you, I'd be GLAD if they brought the same formula for the N5 and would buy one on the spot, no questions asked, but I really doubt Google will bring a superphone for $350 twice).

I'd say Koodo actually has slightly more realistic prices on the cost of lower end phones. Ace II X is $150 retail on Koodo right now but $249.99 on the big 3. Why? It's the same phone! Plus let's factor in storage and shipping of the phones to stores, the call centre employees, the dealer/retailer employees and their commission, and so on. However I do agree that Google changed the game and caught everyone off guard with the Nexus 4 pricing. $350 is very reasonable for that kind of hardware. With that being said, I'm drooling over the new HTC One but I can't afford it unless I sell my GS 3. I'll have it unlocked and include some accessories (Otterbox, car charger, bumper case, extended battery cover) for around $500 all in. Anyone interested? 😛

You can get your GS4 from koodo soon. Reps in the stores have apparently received some training already, so I guess they will carry it soon.

Overpriced what because you got a device that the company makes no profit off the sale of the phone and sold for less than what they made it for? There's 1 device in existence that that has happen with and can't happen from a company that makes phones to make a profit, they wouldn't be in business long if they didn't make profit the only way they do. Your saying that the Galaxy S3 was expensive because it has bad specs and Do you realize that the S3 is a year old and when it came out it was the best spec phone on the market at that time? How much does a laptop cost you a what $600 to $1200 right? Well smartphones are small laptops that are as powerful and even more powerful than most ppls laptops so the pricing is completely in line with where it should be. Also the N4 is the most basic Quad Core phone available, specs aren't everything especially if you don't have a ton of features to use the power on. Samsung includes the most features of any phones available, & if you have to buy apps for your Nexus 4 to do most of the things the S3 or S4 does you'd make up that gap in price pretty quickly.
I have said this before, and Koodo's selection is getting better, and they have a lot of awesome incentives for new clients etc, there need to be retention perks however and benefits of me choosing to remain a customer. Lots of other companies have this, but currently incoming new customers often get a better deal than people who have been customers for five plus years. Now not saying that to bash the company, Koodo is excellent but you know customer rewards programs, incentives are just foods for thought and things to possibly look into and expand on as a company. More so when your competitor is handing out the lastest phones on the market on a things like 2 year contracts, which lets be realistic that is what the tab is. I am a high end user, I pay a high end phone bill, which means 7.50 dollars a month goes to my tab, and it still takes me 20 months to pay it down. Which means it takes the average person longer. Now the advantage is, if you have to buy out it's cheaper, but it's still a contract. There also with that has to be a better mix of phones because right now with phone selection Koodo has no happy medium, it's either 400 plus dollars you have to fork out, or you are going to end up with a phone that is outdated by a couple generations. Again just food for thought.

I agree. Unfortunately currently with their selection there is no middle ground with phones you are forced to pay out for high end brand new to the market phones or stuck with outdated by generations. That being said, the hook is unfortunately the plans are better than lots of others. I am suck in phone limbo right now, and my choices that koodo has kindly worked out for me, is a deal to switch to telus on a contract, or 400 plus tax for the new blackberry on the market. For me I need a BB for work etc, that's what my place of employment uses, so my choices become severely limited. Because I don't want to pay 90 plus dollars a month to telus despite the phone being cheaper. I am stuck with using a barely functioning phone (it has to stay plugged in pretty much all the time) until i can gather up enough funds to throw down 400 for newer blackberry. They were going to send mine away to be fixed but were going to charge me out the tail for a loaner phone which wasn't even worth what I was paying them for a deposit, and unfortunately to go through the trouble of basically transferring everything off and wiping my phone because it's encrypted just to send it in to be fixed and have a crap loaner for over a month is just not going to happen. So I may still switch we will see.

So I mean customer service did the best they could for me, but I mean for me the choice is pretty much pony up or transfer to telus. Or I could pony up for the same model phone, but this is the second one ive had of this model and i'm not just a fan. Now I do not blame Koodo for my situation because it's defiantely a pain in the tail, I do however which there was a way I could have purchases a refurbished bold off them etc, because unfortunately in stores the only two phones they cell is the 9320 curve and the z10 oh and there is also the 8350 curve but that phone is old as dirt and runs on a CDMA network.

I am a customer of six years, so this is where if they had a tab increase for long term customers I could benefit from that, and not even have to even consider leaving the company.
I see this as a nice to have, not an idea. Besides, there is a variety to choose from now. The only thing I like is the S3 but at the end of the day I can buy any phone in the world I want, unlock it and bring it over to Koodo. No one is stopping me...unless I'm too cheap to pay full price 😉
