24 Month Tab Clearance? Really? Or just Marketing Slogan?

Userlevel 1
ok first i want to ask, all plan clear in 24 months for sure? and not only limited to new customers right? where is the site on koodo it says this? say i borrow medium tab from koodo for 300 and i owe 300, on top of the 15% i contribute every month i pay another 5 dollars?! 5 times 24 is only 120... where does the 180 go? Koodo looses the money?

Haha Andy, you've been around this forum long enough to know that NO cell company ever loses money 🙂 You can't be that naif any more, especially after your many MANY posts complaining about how Koodo upped their prices, LOL! Your calculations should not only take in consideration the $5, but should include the 15% and you'll find that you paid off your phone in 2 years after all. Search this forum and you'll find threads where this is discussed in depth. In summary, it's not a marketing slogan, it's really cleared after 24 months 🙂 And Koodo doesn't lose a penny. Enjoy your new phone!

Theorically Sophia, Koodo [i]can end up losing some money under the right (wrong?) circumstances. Let's say someone is on the $30 plan with a TabM. Every month, $9.50 goes towards the Tab ($4.50 from the 15% and $5 from customer). After 24 months, that's $228 towards the Tab, yet Koodo still clears it, effectively forfeiting $72 😛

Very true - that is the ideal situation for the customer. I think Koodo is willing to bet that people will always have some overages and/or data with their plan... but indeed, if you stay strictly on the $30 plan, you win some 🙂 That is why they changed the newer plans which now don't include data at $30 - we all know there are not many people left who don't need that. The ones with the grandfathered double promotion $30 data plan probably are the only winners 😃

Absolutely agreed! And we all know many get itchy after some time and they end up switching to higher priced plans or get some add-ons. We all do it. So when this happens, we help soothe Koodo's financial pain, LOL 😃

Andy, the 24-month guarantee is not tied to the customer, but to the Tab. You can be a new or old customer, it doesn't matter. What matters is the Tab you have. Basically, if you have a Tab that started [i]before July 14th 2013, you're on the older system without the 24-month guarantee. If you got your Tab [i]after July 14th 2013, you're on the newer Tabs with the 24-month guarantee. Koodo contributes 15% of your monthly bill towards your (new) Tab, not you. Your contribution on TabM is $5, nothing more. And yes, depending on the combination of Tab, phone and plan you choose, Koodo ends up loosing a couple bucks under certain circumstances. What you need to know though is that with ANY new Tab, it's cleared in 24 months (or less), whatever amount is left at the end is cleared off, if any.

So the tab I have is one I got before July 14 2013, and I still have it. How do I get the new tab? Do I have to get a new plan on the new tab?

Nope, you can keep your plan. All you have to do is pay off the remainder of your old Tab and buy a new phone, John 🙂
I started a thread regarding the old Tab but didn't really find my answer and was wondering if you people could help. I have a plan that I activated before July 2013 and I would like to know if I have any sort of guarantee (such as the 24-month on new Tabs); is it three years or until my 10% contribution pays it off or I pay the balance off on my own? I couldn't find any information regarding this - even in the papers I got when I signed up with Koodo. I hope there is some sort of guarantee or else, dare I say it, I would've preferred a plan with a contract. Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi Riaz, No, on the old Tab there was no guaranteed pay off term. However there is NOTHING to stop you from paying off the remainder of your Tab manually, after all this time there simply can't be much left 🙂 You can always check self service how much you have left on your Tab. Not sure why you would have preferred plan with a contract? What difference do you think that would have made?

The 24 month expiry only applies to people who activated as of December of 2013. No one knew this was going to happen so it's not like you could have anticipated it. This will give you the details, read from the. 4th paragraph and forward: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/com100/2013/r131202.htm So there are options in terms of what best for you depending on how much tab you have outstanding.

@ Sophia: I thought a contract would've had a guaranteed pay off term so perhaps that would have been something I would've wanted. I think I'll just pay off the Tab at some point rather than waiting for my Tab contribution to pay it off. Thank you Sophia & Chris for trying to help!

When Koodo launched their entire schtick was 'no fixed term contracts', ergo no guaranteed payoff period.

I have an old tab that's been decreasing for 25 months and it's not even half gone ($2.50 removed every month). It'll take over 25 more months for that tab to clear. So, this clearly wasn't better for me then a 3 year contract, but I was aware of this. I got a $100 gist card when I signed up, so that made this easier to accept should I ever have to pay off my tab early.

Hey that makes sense. I got the same amount as well. Funny thing is that when I tried to pay my Tab off using that, they told me I couldn't. So I guess the intention behind the card was so that you could spend it elsewhere. Interesting marketing. I guess it would have been just better for me to purchase an unlocked phone and not worry about paying off the phone in the long run. My phone wasn't even that good to start off so I was hoping that ,if there was a fixed term, it would pay off my phone. Oh well, maybe better decision next time. Thanks everyone
