I'd agree. A dual sim phone would be the smartest choice. Either that or just unlock your phone and carry the other simcard in your wallet.
I'd probably go with Wind for your time in Canada and T-Mobile or Cricket for when you're in the US
Back up your data and try a factory reset. If it doesn't work, then go to a Koodo Kiosk and they can send it in for repair
Most Canadian carriers will connect to the AT&T network down on the states. They use very similar network bands to Canadian carriers.
