Q: Transfer of ownership from postpaid to prepaid account (different person, incl. warranty)?

Hello!

Say, I've received a phone from someone who purchased it online and handed it to me in person.

Since buying it online means you also get a new SIM card and postpaid plan (please correct me if I'm wrong), is it possible to terminate the postpaid account, link the new SIM to my existing prepaid account, keeping the old number? (Or even better, use my existing SIM?)

Also, if I need to get the phone repaired, do I have to hand in the original proof of purchase from the person who bought it for me, or is that not how it works?

The reason I'm asking this is because I don't have a [i]Canadian credit card and so I can't order the phone online, and I can't go to the store either.

Thanks!

You don't need to get a new postpaid plan in order to get the phone. Perhaps if you wanted to take advantage of a sale that is for new activations then yes. There is no need to link a new sim card to anything. You can just put your current sim card in without issue. As per the warranty page you would need to bring proof of purchase: https://www.koodomobile.com/help/warranty-and-repair-policy
Hi Goran, thanks for the reply.

On the Koodo online store, when I click "Add to cart" it charges $15 for a new SIM and I also have to click "Add a plan" (minimum is $35 Canada-wide Talk & Text) in order to progress. What's up with that?

Checkout eventually leads to the "Create Account" page, which asks for CC information (and mine doesn't match my shipping address, since my card's not Canadian)

You need to be a postpaid customer to buy a phone from Koodo. You said that someone bought a Koodo phone and gave it to you. You want to buy a second phone?

@Ron: you cannot buy online if you don't have a Canadian credit card.

Sorry I didn't phrase it clearly, my plan right now is to buy the phone [i]´╗┐through someone else because I can't make the purchase myself, so what I meant is rather "if that happened".

Unfortunately it will have to be through someone or you can buy used from Kijiji or Facebook marketplace or other place if you cannot get a postpaid plan.

@Goran and if they purchase it from Koodo's online store, they can cancel their postpaid plan/account later, throw away the new SIM and just hand the phone to me?

@Ron: you made things complicated yourself
- If someone bought the phone and SIM (and cancel) from Koodo, it was their problem with Koodo. Koodo will deal with that person directly.

- If you bought a phone from someone, then it is between you two.

They can cancel it right away even.

Alright thanks everyone, looks like there's no easy way around getting a phone online directly without a Canadian CC. I'll figure something out.

Is there any reason in particular you really want to buy it off of Koodo?

It's the Essential phone I'm looking at, which is only officially sold by Telus and Koodo in Canada.
