2 sales people told me not to go to prepaid -why not?


I want to switch my unlocked Bell to Prepaid Koodo but 2 sales reps (Best Buy and Walmart) tried to persuade me to sign up on a monthly plan. Am I missing something? I explained I just wanted to use $15 base plan + data boost (1GB) and voice boost (500min) but they kept saying it isn't worth it. I make 45min voicecalls per month and for sure less than 1GB per month data. Seriously, am I missing something? Also can I keep my Bell number with prepaid? What are the steps?

Oops missed the second part of your question: Most certainly you can keep your Bell number. Just purchase a prepaid SIM card from Koodo, sign up online and then port your Bell number across. It's that easy and you don't even need any sales rep 😃 You may need to unlock your phone though if it is locked to Bell... what phone is it?

It is an HTC One (unlocked) and my contract expired a few months ago. I'm looking forward to this new change of service provider!

Nope you are not missing anything. They are just trying to upsell you. It's not even close how much better prepaid is for you 🙂 Don't cancel your bell account. Get your prepaid sim and port your number over http://help.koodomobile.com/getting-started-with-koodo/moving-your-number-to-koodo-new/how-do-i-move-my-number-to-koodo

So what you're saying is just buy a prepaid SIM, do all the activation stuff on the Koodo site and that's that? Is there an activation charge from Koodo?

No activation charge. There should be an option to port your number during activation, or you can port your number afterwards on self serve by going to change your number

So from the looks of this it is $15 for the base plan + $30 for 1GB + $25 for the voice boost = $70 (not really sure of prepaid plans but I think this is what it works out to. For the same plan with postpaid there is a plan that has 1GB of data, unlimited min, unlim text and pic msgs for $64. There is also an added feature since you are bringing your own phone you can get 10% off on your bill (or accumulate more tab points to eventually buy a new phone). I don't know why it was suggested that you do not go prepaid but this is an option if you are interested. As to porting the number (bringing the number from one carrier to another), you would need to make sure that the old number was still active - ie. not cancelled, delinquent, or suspended, and then tell the person that you are dealing with at koodo that you want to port the number - they will ask you for information about your account with Bell (ie. account number, pin number, or your phone like the IMEI) and then we contact your old provider and port the number if we can.

Sorry, as i said, I dont know much about prepaid, but I do know about post paid accounts - and porting the account should be no problem

True, except for the minutes: boosters carry over indefinitely meaning that a $25 booster (500 minutes) can be used up over several months. That means that if one only calls 45 minutes per month, they'd only pay $2.25 per month for voice. Anything less than 1GB of data also costs less than $30 proportionally, whereas with a fixed plan you'd pay the full price whether you use it or not. Apart from that you're absolutely correct and it's a matter of personal choice. I just don't like it when a sales rep tries to talk somebody into something they have no interest in 😞

@Sophia, this is what I wanted confirmed when I went to Walmart. I read and understood as much as I could and made a choice on my needs but the sales rep had other ideas! Anyway, at least he "forced" me to take a closer look at Koodo, and here I am. Will go to Koodo tomorrow to pick up what I need to complete this change. Thanks!
