There should be a slower, cheaper data tier

For those of us who only use data for email and messaging, we should not have to pay the same as somebody who needs fast data for videos, etc. There should be a much cheaper option for slow data. For example, there could be a $5/month add-on for 1gb of slow data. 1Mbps is more than enough.

It's very hard to control the speed. I think there would be the need of a special infrastructure and I don't think it's worth it. Not a lot of people would use it.

Speed throttling isn't difficult at all. Nothing special is needed.

I'd love a 1 Mbps speed instead of an overage or as a cheap add-on.

There were numerous providers in the US with "unlimited" data plans, with the small print explaining that speeds would be throttled after a certain threshold. I personally went thru that sort of scenario with satelitte internet a number of years ago. It was fine until Microsoft or Apple decided to push though a big update that would leave you begging for mercy for days on end afterwards.

For modest users, prepaid actually can work out quite well, since you can use every last bit that you pay for at full speed, regardless of billing cycles. Pay as you go is a great economics teacher.

If you need to download a big update, why wouldn't you simply wait until you're home and connect to wifi? (edit: oh you wrote satellite, so it was your only way to connect to the internet) I like the unlimited/throttled data plans (T-mobile does this, and Wind too) but it has already been suggested umpteen times here and unfortunately Koodo has ignored it so I thought maybe they'd be more receptive to the slow data tier idea.
