Switching Carriers

It is said on the forum to let the carrier you are going to cancel the account you are coming from when you port numbers. Where there is a 30 day notice required, doing this means you pay for service you don't receive. Is it possible to give notice yourself 30 days ahead, and then on day 29 switch carriers and keep your number? This way you pay only for one day of double billing.

Well, I don't want risk to loose my number to do this. What if something goes wrong during porting? They might want to investigate the problem and they do a porting process again. But they cant do it if your account was already closed. It will take about 2 to 3 business days to port your land line number to cell phone. And it will take a few hours to 24 hours for cell to cell porting if everything went well.
