Plan upgrades and Plan cancellations.

I am considering activating a cellphone on koodo. My main cell is on a Rogers enterprise plan, and I want a personal phone that I can use for roaming in USA and Cuba. (Rogers enterprise does not allow Roam like home or packages for Cuba). When I travel, it is sometimes for almost a whole month. I would not need a second phone while I'm in Canada for 9 months of the year. My first query is:

Can I activate a talk/text/data plan (ex: $60/month) for just one month and then cancel? And then a few months later re-activate it for another month? And so on throughout the year since I travel once every 4 months? OR:

Do I just get the cheapest monthly plan ($30), and upgrade to a better data plan ($60) every time I travel so I can take advantage of the Roam Like Home? And then downgrade to the $30 plan when I return home for a few months? What I'm asking is if the upgrade/downgrade is instant?

If I go with the first idea, and reactivate it online each time, there shouldn't ever be an activation charge, correct? And fyi, I have an unlocked phone already for this purpose, I don't care if the phone # changes each time, and I'm not interested in any pre-paid plan.

Thanks for any help

If you cancel cancel, then you need to set up a new account like any new customer.

If you put the plan on seasonal hold, it's $15/month upto 6 month.

Now it is much easier to just keep it on the cheapest plan while in Canada and change plans when u do travel. But obviously there is a cost.

Why don't you just get a local sim while you travel?

Thanks! I like the Seasonal Hold idea. I'll likely go with that. I've thought about getting a local sim, but Cuba does not let you use the 4g network. Only tourists with an Easyroam plan or data package can use the 4g there. Also, Cuba's sim cards have to be manually shaved down to fit the nano slots and can break easily.

Just remember seasonal hold can only be applied once annually.

What are you needing data for? If for GPS mapping, you could use an App with offline mapping capabilities, and get by with a cheaper plan, adding extra GB if needed, rather then buying a larger plan for the month.
Not using it for gps, thanks. I've got an offline map for navigation. When I'm there, i create a hotspot for my friends. Then they can go online anywhere instead of just the local parks. And it doesn't cost them anything. I make absolutely sure that they don't watch YouTube or porn, lol. They are able to use WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family worldwide.

I also do frequent road trips there and it's handy to Google things once in a while.
I just figured there might be a solution where I didn't have to do a second plan all year long.

I can't give up the Rogers enterprise plan, it's too good minus the traveling part. Looks like I might just leave the phone alone while I'm traveling for now, or do the cheap monthly plan and add data as I go, like you mentioned. Thanks for your replies.
