data/gprs in Europe


I was travelling in France, using the international add-on. I only used the phone for a few calls, within the limits. But there's a charge of $190 for "data and sms" or "GPRS." I never checked my email or downloaded anything. How can I be charged up to $30 a day for doing nothing? This is not acceptable.

Did you use your GPS maps to find your way around where you were travelling? That uses data.

No, I didn't. How could I have done that, and why wasn't I warned by Koodo what was happening?

On your phone you can do to Settings and Data and turn off your data.

This is how apps work. None of the wireless companies in Canada give this warning or teach how apps use data.  The CRTC does not require this to be done.  I agree that it would be helpful but it is not a requirement.

Or even just turn off data roaming in settings to prevent data consumption when outside Canada. On my phone International Data Roaming is turned off by default, and I would have to choose to use it.

Hi Paul - I see that you added the $40 international talk, text, and data package before your trip on Sept. 29. This comes with 50mb of data, which was consumed as of Oct. 17. All data used after this date - showing between Oct. 18-27 - was charged at an overage rate of $5/mb, which reflects the overage charge you're seeing on your bill. You would have received a notification on Oct. 16th warning that you've consumed 90% of your allotted data. Hope this helps explain the overage charge. 
I'm not a sophisticated user - I'm a senior and this is my first smartphone. When you said I was approaching my limit, you could have said: "you may wish to turn off international data in settings." Instead you silently ran up the tab for a service I wasn't using. I feel I've been swindled out of $190. I'm going to drop your service, though I realise that the other providers are probably no better.

Technically at $100 Data overage you should have gotten a warning that stops your data and you have to text yes to resume (as per the CRTC wireless Code).  Did this not happen?

Paul - are you able to send us a direct message on Facebook? We can authenticate your account and dig deeper to see why service wasn't automatically stopped once you reached the $100 overage, as Dennis pointed out.
