changing plans

I started with Koodo last December, I’m paying for a monthly plan and would like to change plans with more data. I’ve tried to do it online and it is telling me I have to buy a new phone if I want to change my plan. Is there anyway I can keep my current phone and change my plan so I can’t get more data?
