Warranty if phone is bought off Craigslist?


Hi, I am a non-Koodo customer but I bought a Koodo Nexus 5 off Craigslist and the guy gave me the original receipt. Am I still eligible for warranty coverage from Koodo?

EDIT: Not sure on this one. Since Koodo is basically the middleman between you and the manufacturer for warranty purposes, my guess is they have to honor the warranty up to 1 year from date of purchase, but since you're not the original account holder, that might throw a wrench into things. You might be better off contacting LG directly.

On the warranty card it does say that warranty only applies to the original purchaser. However, the phone was purchased in brand new condition and I do hold the original receipt so I wonder if that could qualify me as the original purchaser.

Generally speaking, contacting LG should be the way you go about doing it. They are the ones who will have to honour the one year aspect. Although, if you have a Koodo account, they might be able to associate that phone with your account and the warranty coverage might still be intact (so long as the phone has not been reported as lost or stolen).

If you don't have a Koodo account and the phone was purchased from someone else Koodo cannot honour the warranty since the paper work along with the warranty would be tied to the person who inititally purchased the phone.

Is there any way of transferring ownership from one person to another? I'm just thinking in terms of if somebody wanted to.gift a phone they bought from Koodo to somebody else, there should be a process of also transferring the warranty no?

Not unless the person who you bought the phone from was giving you the ownership of their current koodo account. With that, you also get the warranty of the phone. If the phone was privately purchased and no transfer of ownership was done for his Koodo account nothing further can be done.

If the account holder gave the phone to someone as a.gift that would be a different story because the account holder would still be responsible for the bills being paid. So the subscriber (person using the phone) would still have the warranty even though it's under someone elses name if that makes sense.

Well I guess I learned my lesson: Never buy phones privately to save time on shipping 😞 For some reason I thought having the original receipt would suffice but now I am the proud owner of $350 dollar paperweight.

You could've bought a Nexus 5 from the google playstore for $400 for 16GB. $450 for 32GB. Generally, I never buy phones privately because you don't know if that phone was reported as lost/stolen and also warranty issues. At least if you purchase a phone from the manufacture or mobile company you'd have some form of warranty.

Hi Paul, This website describes exactly what is wrong with my phone, except for the fact that I am on Wind Mobile instead of T-Mobile although they run the same bands. http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/02/22/bug-watch-nexus-5-can-randomly-stop-receiving-calls-and-text-messages-for-some/ surprisingly, if I input my friend's Rogers sim card into my phone it works fine so it kind of makes this warranty situation a little bit more complex.

That's not a hardware issue, that's a network issue. For that, you would contact whomever your provider is for assistance.

It's not a paperweight as long as it works! However, I have seen a bunch of Nexus 5's being blacklisted recently... Again, contacting LG is a better option.

This is a very interesting point because when I first bought the phone (in early February) I checked the IMEI on the blacklist website and it did not show that it had been blacklisted (The receipt shows the phone was bought on February 9th). I checked it again yesterday and it says it IS blacklisted and on the national database. I am furious that I got duped, I'm still a little confused because he did give me the receipt so did he buy the phone, sell it to me and then report it stolen? I do not understand why he would do that because I don't think it benefits him in any way. If this is the case, do you think I could contact Koodo and try to set up some sort of meeting with him so we can figure this out?

Here's the scam: An identity theif buys a phone (on a tab) and uses it until a few days or a week before the bill would be generated (thus alerting the victim to possible fraud) the scam artists then sell the phone and pocket the cash. By the time the carrier is notified of the fraudulent account and locks the phone down as stolen, the theif is long gone.

That seems like it could happen. I'm just thinking that when I signed up for an account I had to provide so much information (CC, Drivers License) etc. and I think they run a credit check for pay after accounts (since the receipt shows he is on the tab I assume he is a pay after account) it seems like a lot of work for $350. It would have been easier if he just used a fake credit card to buy a whole bunch of Nexus 5's off the play store. In any case, I suspect he used a fake number and most of the interactions were done through craigslist mail relay so I highly doubt the police would be able to track him down. Contacting them would result in just another case-file to be generated, logged and untouched forever. At this point I think I'm just going to use it as a media device or something I guess.

I haven't had the opportunity to request a warranty repair through Koodo yet so I cannot comment, but I'd go to a nearest kiosk and see what they say. Legally, I don't think that Koodo has any right to refuse a warranty claim if you have proof of purchase from an authorized seller. But then again, I'm not a lawyer. I have had previous carriers ship phones on my behalf because I had proof of purchase. Nobody ever cared about the name on the invoice. I will warn you that if your bootloader was unlocked for rooting/customizing purposes, your warranty claim will be denied unless you remove all evidence of software tampering (i.e. flash it back to stock and re-lock the bootloader).

I'd just like to say that you will 99.9% be fine. I've NEVER heard of a carrier refusing to do warranty work because it was sold to someone else. I've done it countless times with many phones. The warranty is tied to the phone. Unless you LITERALLY have to register your name when purchasing a Nexus 5, you are absolutely fine.
