WANT TO SWITCH TO PAY-AS-YOU-GO


The salesman at Walmart sucked me into getting a monthly plan for my son when I wanted pay as you go to begin with. He said it would be cheaper but it has not been cheaper at all- my son hardly uses this phone, it's basically a phone just to get ahold of me if we're apart. How can I switch it over to a pay as you go by myself? I rather not deal with anymore 'representatives'. Thanks for you help!

You can cancel your plan within 15 days.

Just return your phone and cancel.  They get a Prepaid sim/phone

If it has been longer than 15 days, you can contact Koodo directly and cancel. Any outstanding TAB or.gift amounts offered on the phone will be added to the next invoice. You can get a fresh prepaid SIM, and set up the existing phone on a prepaid account.  Note: prepaid phones are all purchased outright, so there is no subsidy, as there often is for monthly plan purchases. If there were special offers on the phone at the time of purchase, it may be worth waiting 90 days, so you do not have to repay any special.gifts.

Thanks for the reply. It's been about a month that we've had it.. it's one of those Alcatel phones ($99?) that I still have a tab on. So I should just pay out the tab, buy a new Sim card and that should work ?

Just buy a prepaid sim.  Activate it with any number.  Then port your number over which will cancel your post paid account and put your remaining tab automatically on your final bill

Now a days it is hard to believe that some young people use so little phone. The salesman at Walmart maybe initially had a good intentions. 

It is true though that in some cases monthly plan could be cheaper than prepaid although not shock free like prepaid for less responsible ones.
The salesman only intention was to get me to spend more money lol he was trying hard for me to get a smartphone but at least I stuck to my guns that way.. my son is only 11, he doesn't need Internet on a phone, he has that luxury at home. This salesman looked at me like I was a terrible mother for not getting him a smartphone lol On a plan, I'm paying $30 plus tax when he's only used it the odd time to text me (like once every other week) so pay as you go seems to be the more sensible route to go 🙂 The salesman kept me there for over 2 hrs- I should've just walked away lol

Bonnie this particular salesman didn't have good intentions in mind for you and your son, indeed.  You did your math so it seems for me that it is the best and cheapest option at the moment.  Actually you are a good mother in doing so, but believe me I have seen younger kids then yours already addicted to their smart phones.

Unfortunately you wasted 2 hrs. of your precious time. You should've said no and walk away right away.

Bonnie? Does your son do more than text once every other week? Are calls made and such as well? What would be your sons estimated usage for the month for texts and minutes?
Phone calls are very rarely made, he's called me maybe twice in the month we've had it and they were very brief calls.. it's rare that we're apart so the only time he really texts me is if he's at a family members/friends for the night... he only has the #s of his uncle, dad & grandparents so once in awhile he'll text them... so really I'm not even sure he'd even use up $15 worth of minutes in a month! Lol

You may benefit more from a pay per use plan from someone like Virgin Mobile. Calls are $0.40/min, texts are $0.30/text to Canada and the US, incoming texts are free. http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/plans/details.html#!/prepaid/perminute If your son plans on using any more than $15 worth of pay as you go or are looking for traveling packages, data, etc. I would suggest staying with Koodo though.

If you switch to Virgin, you would need to unlock your phone first

Hi Bonnie, I haven't seen a couple of things said about the Prepaid plans. If you are ok with $15 a month plus whatever the tax is in your Province, then Prepaid might be the way to go. If you go to a koodo kiosk, and they are as helpful as the young lady I saw, they will switch you over and set you up. There is a $20 sim card needed, but it ends up being free. If you agree to have auto billing to your credit card you get a one time bonus of 100 talk minutes. If you buy a 100 minute talk booster for as I recall $10, then you have 200 minutes for 5 cents a minute. With the $15 a month you get unlimited texting so he can text to his heart content. The best part is that the talk minutes roll over every month and you never lose them as long as you don't let you plan lapse basically. Unlike you current plan where any unused minutes in your allotment are lost and reset for the new month. It's been a couple of years since I switched over so some things may have changed. If I'm wrong I know Mayumi or one of the others will jump in and update this.
