scanners in smartphones. there has to be a way where we can use the camera in the smartphone as a scanner [with the camera megapixel power] to do real scannings, instead of just taking a pic.The current apps are limited. can any1 think of a way to make this happen?

I don't what you want to use the scanner for but I have SCAN on my S3. Does the job very well. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.scan.android.client&hl=en
If you're using an android smart phone you can try and use the app barcode scanner. I think it does a fantastic job of recognizing various barcodes. It does drain alot of battery because it is always autofocusing the camera so it doesnt matter what angle you are trying the scan the barcode at it should beable to read. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.zxing.client.android&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5nb29nbGUuenhpbmcuY2xpZW50LmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..

Do you mean as a scanner to scan documents? There are plenty in the Google Play Store if that what you mean including this great one. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.intsig.camscanner I'm sure there must be some in the Apple Aps store if you have an IOS device also
