Receive incoming text without roaming charges while abroad

About receiving incoming texts while travelling:

I am using iPhone.  Plan to get a prepaid eSim while abroad for local use and keep my Koodo nano Sim in the phone as I need to receive incoming texts from certain Canadian websites for 2FA purposes.

  1.  Will I be able to receive incoming texts (texted to my Canadian tel number) if I have data roaming turned off?
  2. Will I be charged for incoming texts to my Canadian number while I’m abroad?  I know other carriers like Fido will not charge for incoming texts while travelling, but I cannot find this info on Koodo website.

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

I assumed you travel to another country besides US.

  1. Yes, if you are a postpaid customer and and you had roaming add-on (international data and voice roaming). You should turn off BOTH cellular data and data roaming. Turning off data roaming isn’t enough to stop the phone from using data.
  2. Incoming text is free anywhere. This should have more detail https://www.koodomobile.com/en/easyroam

Thanks Dinh.  I will be travelling to US, Europe and Asia.

  1.  I’m a postpaid customer with unlimited international texting, but NOT the roaming add-on.  So I will turn data roaming off to avoid getting roaming charges but still receive texts on my Koodo number for 2FA purposes?   If I turn off cellular data as well, I won’t be able to use data from the prepaid eSim card during travels (e.g. the US local prepaid eSim card)?

Thanks for your time.

Unlimited international texting is only applicable if you send/receive text while you are in Canada. When you roam, only incoming text is free. Anything else would be charged by roaming fee (either by easyroam or payperuse rate).
If you are using a dual sim phone, you can turn off cellular data for each line. Make sure you turn off both cellular data and roaming data for that line. Otherwise, the phone could still “ping” local cellular network.

Just to clarify...if I turned off cellular data and roaming data for my Koodo postpaid line, would I still be able to receive incoming text on that line?   I want to ensure I can still receive incoming texts from banks etc. for 2FA authentification purposes.  Thanks!
