Question

Possible voice phishing scam

I had a very garbled phone call from number (250) 686-7234 on Tuesday. I could barely hear anything. It seems to fit the scam that has been on the news.   BEWARE!  What is Koodo doing to prevent these kinds of calls?

Or it could have been a caller from Victoria with a poor connection.

Carriers don't do anything to protect you from scams. Anyone can send you SMS, call you, etc. assuming they have your number. You might find apps for Android/iOS that could potentially flag calls or texts as numbers used by scammers, but that's probably the best you'll get. To report fraud you can go to http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/ or call 888-495-8501. You can report fraud regardless of its origin, and regardless of the means of communication (email, sms, phone call, phishing link, etc.).

Except, neither we, nor the OP has any idea if this is fraud, or simply a caller with a poor connection.

If you're going to assume any call, from other than a known caller, which asks questions which can be answered with a yes or no response is a phishing scam then the anti-fraud centre, and a bunch of businesses are going to be very busy chasing nothing.
