I will be living in China for a year, but I don't want to lose my phone number. Any ideas?

Like the title says, I will be living in China next year for at least over a year. As I might possibly return, I don't want to lose my phone number. I don't want to spend a crazy amount of money on a plan, and I noticed the cheapest plan would be $30 a month. Considering I won't be using koodoo in China, that seems too pricey.

Is there any way I can just reserve the number for a lower cost? or get an even cheaper plan?

Thanks

Hi,
Koodo had something called "seasonal hold" $15/month https://www.koodomobile.com/help/keeping-your-account-open-when-travelling but that would be expensive given the 1year oversea. Another option with Koodo is a prepaid SIM, you need to top it up $15 every 89 days to keep the number.

I would suggest you port number to a VoiP service like fongo ($25)https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/articles/212437426-Keep-Your-Current-Phone-Number-Port-In-. You still can receive/make call (text is extra $) while you are in China. When you are back, port back to Koodo.

I use Fongo as a secondary phone number to make calls overseas. It works great. Depending on the connection you might have a small lag time but you can't beat stjll having a Canadian number thst can be used anywhere you are with data / internet. And no monthly cost.

@Kid Milli just so you know, seasonal hold with Koodo is only good for 6 months as the info in the link says.

So you're much better off with other options. Number barn is one of many.

I’ll add my voice to those suggesting a VoIP service. Porting your number to a service such as VoIP.ms or Call Centric, will not only hold your number for about a dollar per month, but will allow folks call and text your current number, which you can forward to your number in China for less than a penny per minute.
