Do monthly SIM Cards expire after 90 days?


My wife is a monthly subscriber (not prepaid). Her usual phone (BlackBerry Z10) went for a nose dive on the pavement last night and has stopped working. While it's in the shop, she wants to go back to using her old phone (Galaxy Ace). The Ace and Z10 have different sized SIM cards, so when I bought her the Z10 I bought a new SIM card for her. She still has her old SIM card in the Ace. When I called Koodo last night to switch her account over to her old SIM card so that she could use the Ace, they told me that deactivated SIM cards expire after 90 days so I'd have to buy a new one. This seems really strange to me - is there any technical or security reason for such a policy? Do I really have to go buy her a new SIM card? Thanks!

Hi Dave, What the rep told you is indeed correct. When the old sim card has been deactivated for a period of time (90 days) it becomes inactive and then the network side disconnects the old card so that it can no longer be used. Hope that helps 🙂

Yes they do expire after 90 days so a new sim card will need to be bought for your wife. They cost $10

I have several SIM cars that I use despite having only one active phone at the time. There's a workaround to the expiration: re-register the card via Self Serve before 90 days are up and then switch it back out. This resets the timer to another 90 days.
