Changing local area but keeping same phone number

Hello,

I will be moving back from Toronto to Windsor soon. I'm wondering if I can keep my current (647) phone number instead of switching to a Windsor (519 or 226) number, for convenience sake.

It doesn't matter for me because I have Canada-wide, but will Windsor people calling me without Canada-wide have to pay long distance, even though my address will be a local address?

Ranting side note: I know Koodo isn't really guilty but I think long distance charges are outrageous in this day in age where it costs companies literally nothing to connect two people anywhere in the world together... *cough*Bell*cough*

Thanks in advance!

You can keep any number you want, no matter where you live. People who are NOT with Koodo (or any other carrier without Canada wide plans) would indeed have to pay LD if they call your Toronto number from Windsor... talk them into going with Koodo and their problem is solved 🙂

To my knowledge, it is not possible to make a non-local exchange number local to another exchange. Thus a number from Toronto cannot be made local in Windsor. It would be nice to have a truly portable number you keep for life, such is currently not (readily) available.

So I can keep my number if staying within the same area code/NNX - correct?  Thanks.
Thanks for your replies. Guess I will switch my number when I move back! Was just hoping to avoid having to ask all my friends and family to update it, and update it with my various other services/companies/etc.
Hello, can if I am moving within the same exchange/area code, can I retain the same telephone #?  Thanks.  🙂

you can keep the same NPA/NXX no matter where you live in Canada.  As long as you have Canada-wide calling, it won't matter where your NPA/NXX is from
I want to confirm that people calling me in my new area will not incur long distance charges.  Thanks.

People calling you is a different story, there are 3 scenarios:

- if they have a number in the same area as yourself, they will NOT incur LD charges
- if they do NOT have a number in the same area as yourself and have a LD plan, they will NOT incur LD charges
- if they do NOT have a number in the same area as yourself and do NOT have a LD plan, they WILL incur charges.

Hope that helps 🙂
