I will be attending school in the united states. With the dollar being poor I think its best to keep my koodo plan and just add the us talk and text add on. I want to be able to text my friends and family at home. I know koodo adversities as having unlimited calls to the us and canada for myself. However, will the people in canada receive charges for calling/texting me?

They won't be charged extra just because you're in the USA.

And none of Koodo's plans offer unlimited calling to the USA without an add on.

I meant that I would be keeping my current koodo monthly plan and adding the U.S unlimited minutes and text for every 30 days. My friends and family are not with koodo so I want to make sure they won't receive a charge for texting or calling me.

If you insist on maintaining your current Cdn number on Koodo and go with a roaming package, I can assure you local folks in the states will never call or text you, even if they live next door. Americans are very comfortable with free US long distance, but can be tele-xenophobic when calling "foreign" countries.

If you are away for more than a few months, port your Cdn number out to CallCentric or another VoIP provider that offers call forwarding within North America. Get yourself a prepaid Tracfone. Buy the minutes and service time you need. International long distance to Canada is included. Put your Koodo account on hold.

Outgoing calls to Canada: no extra charge. Incoming calls from back home: forwarded from your "local" VoIP number to your Tracfone. Back home folks and locals can call you without worrying about long distance.

Incoming texts: no extra charge to anyone. Texts must be sent directly to your Tracfone number, not call forwarding. Outgoing texts: free in the USA, and though not officially supported, also to Canada.

Check out eBay for Tracfone deals. $100 will buy you an Android Ultimate 2 phone with 1200 minutes, 1200 texts and 1,2 gig of data with no recurring monthly charges. Call forwarding can be range from 0 - $6 a month depending on which supplier you use.

My answer still stands, Canadian callers calling your Canadian number will not incur extra charges regardless of your location.

Your answer was dead-on as usual. I was just elaborating on a more economical long-term plan that could save some $$$ if the original poster is interested.

Also if Miiranda has a tab, porting out will cancel her service and she'd be on the hook to pay off that tab immediately.
