I was working in Sarnia somewhat near the water and received the courtesy text from Koodo, welcoming me to the USA and providing the rates I would be charged for sending texts/making calls.

Because American towers have often stronger signals than Canadian ones. Happens with every phone company when you are clost to the US border.

1. If the amount is worth your while, call Koodo and explain what happened. They will reimburse you know questions asked, if this is your first time.
2. Change your settings to only pick up Koodo signals when you are close to the border. I think ist's under cellular network.

If you've got an Android you should look on the internet on how to stop automatic carrier searching!
