why would texting require data plan

I have an apple 4OS 8G and I have to turn on my data in order to receive any text. I use my wifi connection at home for my internet, which is working fine without turning on the data, but in order to get text and send text I have to turn on my data and enable 3G. This makes no sense to me and I am being charged for data use as if I keep the data on and go onto the internet it uses the data and not my wifi. How do I fix this. I didn't think I needed data in order to text people?

No you don't need data, but since iMessage uses a separate way of texting people, it uses an internet connection. Therefore, in order to send/receive texts while not on data (wifi or 3G) you should disbale iMesage (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5185).

Keep in mind that you won't be able to send/receive MMSs anymore becasue they require data.

Hope I helped.
