The phone I'd bought is used, and I know that it was under telus (that helps anything). I was originally having trouble sending text messages and thought that this might be the issue.

I checked the number on this site, it said it should work and when I go to try and put it on my account it says it's invalid.

It could be reported stolen or blacklisted for some reason. Check it at this link and let me know if it shows blacklisted in Canada.

Also be very certain you have entered the IMEI correctly.

Wouldn't that site be the good one : https://www.devicecheck.ca/check-status-device-canada/

Any site that works and isn't malicious is a good one in my opinion Robert. There's more than one "good one"
