Why is the Nexus 5X so much more money from Koodo than from Google? In fact buying the phone outright from Koodo costs $80 more than it does from Google, in Canadian dollars.

Well Matt that's business.
Koodo has never been in the business of selling outright devices.
Anyone with the money to buy it will just buy it direct from Google anyway.

With the phone being factory unlocked, there would be plenty of traffic buying the phones at cost and bringing them to other carriers.

If this is done in store, at least the company makes back its shipping costs and pockets a little coin.

And if there is a warranty repair problem, Koodo may feel more inclined than Google to provide a temporary replacement.

Google has, with the exception of the 6, and 6P, been sold by Google at about break even. Carriers worldwide with extremely few exceptions have been selling NExus phones at a premium to make money off of them. It's the usual lie of "we're not in the business to sell phones, we don't make a lot of moeny off of them" only to charge 100-200 more for a Nexus phone. It's business.
