It never shows 4G. My friend uses LG phone and Koodo plan. His phone can show 4G. However, my phone shows 3G at the same area.

LTE is the same thing as 4G. So if you have LTE then you'd have the same speed as your friends. Android just decided to show it as 4G

Marketing, really. Technically 3G and 4G are separate network protocols entirely. LTE is like a pseudo 4G system that with LTE-Advanced is only now meeting the technical requirements for 4G. For all intents and purposes, 4G and LTE are the same...but carriers can also use 4G to refer to the faster 3G protocols such as Dual Channel HSPA+.  Different phone companies will show different things for it. 3G can also show up as H or H+, etc.

Thanks for your answer. It is normal that my iPhone never shows 4G, isn't it?

3G = 4G or H/H+.

LTE/+ is true 4G, and 5G is coming out within 5 years or so, maybe even earlier.

Justin ---- what was your experience with TelCel? Lots of Canadian snowbirds would be interested to know.

Thanks for sharing.

It was perfect, I bought 2 prepaid sims online before I left that were loaded with with 1GB and 3 GB of data and and the 2 sims were linked of I had unlimited texting between both while in Mexico. Coverage was perfect in Playa deal Carmen. It was a bit pricy where I had to buy in in USD but better than the Koodo or Bell addon's as we had 2 iPhones and we just used the data to FaceTime or iMessage back to Canada while we were able text one another for free while in Mexico.

The resort we stayed on had no free Wifi and it cost like $20 a day with poor coverage, this worked out much better.

Ye I think Telcel is the one with lte but I think voice isn't compatible and it's possible that they haven't expanded lte to the area of the particular resort that you stayed at. Y can always go on their site and check out th coverage map if you're still curious.

The whole time I was in Mexico from landing in Cancun driving down to Playa del Carmen and in downtown Playa the phone only showed 4G.
